You know who they are. That person in your life (most likely a parent or an in-law as the case may be) who seems to have everything they want to be happy, who is difficult to buy for, or who smiles and tells you that they don’t want anything for Christmas. Now what?
I have been raving about Ancestry DNA ever since my husband and I were given the opportunity to each receive a kit for testing, and have decided that it is THE gift to give this Christmas, to everyone hard to buy for or not. Who wouldn’t want an insightful, interesting, and thought-provoking look into their ancestry?
My results were pretty much what I had expected. Knowing that both sides of great-grandparents came to Canada from the same area (Romania/Ukraine/Austria) I didn’t expect any big surprises and a 92% European ancestry confirmed that. Of course, there’s that 8% Asia + West Asia component that was a fun surprise and something to chatter about with girlfriends! All in all, having an Ancestry DNA Kit experience was fulfilling and interesting and a great insight into our past.
The kit is $129 CDN and you will receive it within a week or so after ordering. Once your kit is activated online and you mail away your test tube, the results will be available within 6-8 weeks (ours was about 6 weeks, I anticipate there are busier times of the year).
The procedure itself is really simple, you simply provide saliva into a test tube and mail it away in the pre-paid package (to Ireland!) and wait for your results. The company keeps you updated along the way via email, letting you know when the package as been received, when it’s being tested, and finally when your results are available to log-in and view on the site.
If you have someone on your list that has everything, or is difficult to buy for, Ancestry DNA is a great idea! If you yourself have been curious about your ancestry or just think it would be intriguing to investigate, a $129 Ancestry DNA purchase is a great gift to yourself (or something to suggest to Santa who sometimes needs a hint!)
Where to Buy: ancestry.ca/dna
Pricing: $129

I was adopted at the age of 5 and I never knew who my biological father was. Sadly my mother passed away a few years ago so I am left with no biological evidence besides my very being (at the young age of 28). This is something I’ve always wanted to know since I’ve been asked my entire life what my ethnicity was. It would be an honor & would be forever grateful to know. Thank you for this opportunity to enter!

I would definitely give it to my husband, Mike Myers (he goes by Archie). He’s an ex-Army Veteran and was UN Peace Keeper during the Cold War (between the United States and Russia). Part of his getting comfortable with himself again is relearning about himself. As far as he knows, he says he’s “just a mutt”, but I think just knowing what his DNA is would go a long way to helping him heal from his PTSD, by helping him seeing himself as “more than just a mutt”.
