Take Your Holiday Decor Up A Notch

We love celebrating the seasons in our household, I find that just switching up the table centerpiece, or the mantle, or OK fine the bathroom decor too, can perk everyone up when we get the mid-week blahs (I mean, there are pumpkins on my bathroom sink, how can you be grumpy with pumpkins everywhere?!)

Taking decor outside can be fun too – I love wreaths on my door and change them up regularly. Halloween decor is a whole other beast, literally, with at least 5 inflatables on my front lawn every year.

Now, a new product from Sengled is taking my holiday decor up a notch, and I’m sharing my discovery with you!

Pulse by Sengled is an LED light bulb with a built-in Bluetooth speaker that you can control with your smartphone or tablet. It’s super easy to install and, since it screws into a light socket, is completely wireless and takes up almost no space! It can easily be installed in your kitchen to amp up your meal prep fun with music, or outdoor on your patio (“Why yes I do have built in speakers, of course I do!”)

With Halloween around the corner, here’s a crazy-easy tutorial to make a singing (and spooky speaking, if so inclined!) pumpkin for indoor or outdoor use. Oh, I’m going to have so much fun this Halloween with this one! I can use Solo to play scary (or fun) Halloween music directly from my phone or favourite streaming app AND I can even use my voice memo app (yeah, I’m going to enjoy that one with my kids!)

What You’ll Need

1 pumpkin
1 stencil
1 pumpkin carving saw
1 stencil poker or toothpick
1 big spoon or scoop
parchment paper
scotch tape
1 light socket + cord
1 Solo speaker bulb by Sengled

Steps

1. Using the carving saw, cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin around the stem. Be sure to cut at an inwards-facing angle so that the top will rest on the opening and not fall right in.

2. Remove all the pumpkin innards and seeds. Scrape the walls of the pumpkin with the scoop to ensure that they are clean and free of any loose bits.

3. Tape your stencil on the front of your pumpkin and use the poker (or toothpick) to poke shallow holes at regular intervals around the outlines of your stencil. These holes will serve as a guide when carving.

4. Remove the stencil and use the saw to cut along the line of holes. It is best to start by cutting out the smaller parts and then move on to the larger ones.

5. Cut a hole at the back of the pumpkin big enough to fit the head of the Solo bulb.

6. Screw the Solo bulb into the light socket cord and loosely wrap a sheet of parchment paper around the sides of the bulb, leaving the ends open for ventilation. The parchment paper will act as a barrier to keep pumpkin gunk from coming into contact with the bulb. We recommend using parchment paper opposed to wax paper as the bulb will heat up when the light is on.

7. Place the Solo bulb inside the pumpkin (we find that pointing the light towards the side of the pumpkin looks best once lit).

8. Plug in the cord, download the app and follow the instructions that come with your Solo bulb to pair it with your mobile device.

And that’s it! Your Solo pumpkin speaker is now ready for show time!

The Solo LED bulb with stereo sound can be found at Sengled.com for $59.99 CDN. The Energy-saving LED bulb is rated for 25,000 hours of use (~17 years).
