I know, it’s as though as soon as the calendar flips to August we suddenly get bombarded with back to school ads and the to-do list that starts to grow. While we still have a beautiful month of summer vacation to enjoy, it pays to be prepared. This year, I headed out shopping for back to school items earlier than ever – and I’m pretty happy to say I am D. O. N. E.
Armed with my list (which, if you forget, Staples has printed in store waiting for you, hooray!) I set out one day last week – alone – to do my back to school supplies shopping. Some experts (?) advise taking your kids with you so they can have a say in the colour of duotangs you pick. I say that this choice is entirely dependent on your own family and the amount of wine you may need at the end of that day.
The thing is, kids are generally good about giving you some ideas on their favorite colours and trends and – at least in my experience – the younger they are, the less they’re concerned about the color of their binder. Since my son was at home with his phone at his side, we texted each other back and forth when I needed some direction.
And speaking of direction, I can’t tell you how impressed I was as a parent to find these laminated maps attached to the carts at Staples in east Regina! This helped tremendously in my search for items and also made me feel valued as a shopper – Staples gets that my time is important!
There are definitely some trends this back to school season, and Staples has them all figured out for you ahead of your shopping adventure:

Usually mid-late August.
Back to school shopping was so much fun when I was a kid.
We are about three quarters of the way through our back to school shopping, for the school supplies list. I am holding off on buying any shoes until the last week before school – the girls need them, but have had last minute growth spurts in the past, so we wait. And I don’t think they need any new clothes.
I remember back to shopping with my Mom. New school supplies were exciting.
I love back to school shopping… now that it’s for my own classroom, I get even more excited! My favourite things are smelly markers and post-its in fun shapes.
I loved shopping for back to school as a child…choosing the colour of my binders etc. As an adult I am not so fond of it. Two of my children attend a school which holds Staples group buy (which I love). The eldest requires in store shopping which can be stressful. I have started the clothes shopping and did the group buy…off to Staples later this month for the rest.
I love going back to school shopping. I’ve got some supplies for my older grandkids already but their mom’s are going shopping with them closer to the end of August.
Usually started BTS around the middle of August.
It’s been such an awesome summer, and I’m only just starting to think about school stuff! Guess I should get on that, but I’m holding out because I don’t want to think about summer ending. This would sure help in the budget area! 🙂
I was always the one excited to be going back. Going to pick out my new backpack and trapper keeper binder were big things back in the day
I used to love back to school shopping as a child. With 5 of us to buy for my mom was probably not as enthusiastic about it. She did have us go through flyers with our lists that the school gave us to find the best prices. My favourite thing to buy each year was a new pack of 24 pencil crayons. I did a lot of colouring on school projects so they got pretty small by the end of the year except for the white crayon. We had a large collection of these in our home crayon box where all the old crayons went at the end of the year.
We are in the midst of BTS shopping. The clothes & shoes are done, the supplies are started but no where near done yet. I just pick things up as I see them on sale right now. We’ll get serious in the next week or two though
Love staples one stop shopping
Back to school shopping means the end of summer? So I leave it to the very last minute then I’m scrambling to find everything my daughter needs
one stop shopping at Staples
I really enjoyed back to school shopping as a child. As a parent it may not be as much fun, but about mid August it will happen.
I help with back to school shopping for my grandchildren but I always loved going shopping for back to school things when I was in school.
I love shopping with the grandkids for back to school and helping them get the coolest items which we will do next weekend. When my kids were young it was always a fun time!
I remember always waiting for the Canadian Tire Back to School Flyer to come out so I could sit down and make my shopping list. Also going shopping for the First Day back to school outfit.
I enjoy shopping for back to school items. From school supplies to clothing/shoes. When it get closer to school its goodies that the kids like to have in their lunches
We usually always go back to school shopping at the end of August! I always loved going back to school shopping as a child and getting new supplies. It was always so much fun! Thank you so much for the opportunity ?
Not much to do. My youngest is going into grade 6 and I just have to pay the school $40 for supplies. And my older daughter is going into grade 10 and really just needs a binder, pens, and pencils to start. We’ll be going clothes shopping and other necessities at the end of the month.
I remember back to school shopping, we always were the last minute ones too, and it would be sooo crowded in the stores! Fun times lol
I used to love back to school shopping as a kid! I always wanted the biggest packages of pencil crayons and markers because art was my favourite activity.
We haven’t been back to school shopping yet. We usually start at the end of August. When we were younger, my sister and I used to buy our supplies very early on in August and it got us in the back to school mode too soon!! So I like to leave it closer to the end for my little one now.
I have not even started yet. Grade 2 and 12 here!
We have a few items bought and coming from ordered online.. major stuff in next few weeks…
I loved back to school shopping so much (as a kid) that now, as an adult with a small business, I buy new pens and the like for my business every August. 🙂
I haven’t started back to school shopping yet! ?
My kids and I don’t mind it though. There’s so many neat things on the market now!
I usually shop about a week before
Staples is my normal “go-to” place for back to school shopping. Love how it arrives to my door in a couple of days. Last year, I tried Walmart. NEVER AGAIN! I am still waiting for my order from August 13, 2015. I was refunded in October.
Back to Staples this year!
I remember helping my mom do back to school shopping the year after i graduated…It was a lot of fun to shop for when I only had to think about my brother going back to school and knew I didn’t have to go back! I have made my list for this year but I haven’t done any shopping yet.
I have made it a yearly shopping trip with my girls. We leave Dad at home and make a day of it! We look forward to it every year!
I was surprised to see this in my Facebook feed but I have left it very late to shop for school, and regretted it. I appreciate the reminder
It was a big event when I was a child as we lived in a rural area, we would get the bus into town and once we had done our shopping we would go for lunch which was quite a treat!
Haven’t started yet. Usually start mid August and finish up by the end August. Back to school shopping was my favorite thing to do when I was younger we would head to the states for the weekend for new clothes, shoes and backpacks
I love shopping for the new clothes and items needed for BTS and sort of shop all summer long
I have not even started mine yet for my four kids! I remember when I was a kid, my mom would let me pick out an outfit for the first day out of the Sears catalogue 🙂
I remember how I love all the new supplies and to put my name on everything
Back to school shopping was always my favorite as a kid. I still love shopping for office supplies in September even when I don’t really need anything!
Will be starting back to school shopping soon, my son will be going into SK.
I always loved back to school shopping just didn’t like to use them when I started back. Liked to keep everything looking new.
I have not even started my back to School shopping for my kids. I always liked to get new clothes and school supplies as a kid.
Hi shop as soon as school stuff are on sale
I really enjoyed back to school shopping, everything new and shiny, I didn’t like the cost but everything else I did, and now I get to buy for my oldest granddaughter, she will be starting JK this year!!
Hardly had anything to buy because they brought so much home at end of year.
I am in the midst of it. I have one in Grade 11 and one starting Grade 9.. I am currently watching the flyers and going to try to get the best deals on everything that I can. Just got the paper for .19 cents!!
I have not started back to school shopping. We won’t need too much this year as I stocked up last year but backpacks, calculators, pencils and some other items will be required. I don’t have any memories of bts shopping from when I was a kid. Shopping has always been a chore for me so that is probably why.
I loved shopping for new clothes for back to school.
I am in the midst of back to school shopping for my 17 yo who is going to grade 12,,,it gets worse as they get older..lol.:)
I loved it as a kid though I’m pretty sure my mom didn’t , usually last ,unite shopping
I love back to school shopping…usually lol. Now that kids are getting a bit bigger it’s more stressful since I don’t “pick the right one” lol
I used to love shopping for school supplies as a kid. New crayons, pencils, and duotangs. I still get a charge out of it today, and use the excuse that I’m buying for my nieces, but end up with plenty of cute supplies for myself.
I loved going shopping when my girls were little. watching them look over all the book bags and lunch boxes deciding which ones they wanted. so cute.
I always got excited when going shopping for back to school.
Nope not yet..I will have to soon but at this time I’m putting it off till I canon any longer
We haven’t started back to school shopping yet. We will probably get to it in a week or 2.
Done shopping for my kids…Always enjoyed it when I was a kid too.
haven’t started shopping yet
We’re in the thick of it. Never did enjoy it as a kid…..
As a child, I wasn’t too excited about seeing the flyers the end of July with back to school items as it always signaled that summer was half over. I did however especially enjoy shopping for new school clothes.
back to school shopping was my fave time of year as a kid. So much new swag and even back then we always shopped at staples
memories of back to school shopping as a kid: Mom usually bought the supplies we needed. Very exciting time.
I have memories of being bombarded and catapulted with 3 page lists times 5 kids of stuff they need! Only to find out they didn’t need half if it!! OK those laminated maps, I’m dying. 🙂
Im in the midst of shopping for back to school stuff right now.
This will be my daughters first year in school, so we are excited for that!
I loved back to school shopping as a kid! As a parent, I’m less thrilled. lol
love back to school shopping
I have just started doing some shopping for the littlest one , what a task ! our boys are high school and college aged which makes things a little easier as they can help choose and pay for their own items
I love BTS shopping, but to be honest, I stockpiled enough last year when they had the great sales and then the clearance after school started, that this year I only needed a handful of items.
I have not even thought about it yet. My son is going into high school and I am a total newbie at that one. My daughter is going into grade 7, so she’s still pretty easy to shop for. I’ll be hitting staples the last week of August for sure.
Right now I’m helping my niece with back to school shopping but I remember as a kid the only good thing about going back to school was the shopping. I remember the excitement of picking everything thing out and wanting to wear everything in the worst way but I wasn’t allowed to wear anything until school started.
I’ve started. i picked up some clothes and got some deals on some stationary. Will still need to get few more thing in next couple of weeks
I’m in the midst of back to school shopping now. I don’t mind shopping for school supplies, but don’t particularly care for BTS clothing shopping.
Right now I’m thinking about back to school shopping for myself and my classroom. My own kids aren’t old enough yet to need any supplies, but I always love getting new things for myself and my students!
Almost done the back to school shopping. Just need to pick up a couple more things
My daughter is grown now; we’re doing shopping for college, but I always looked forward to shopping for back to school. I’d get excited by all the pens and pencils and crayons, and backpacks and calculators.
Just did some back to school shopping today! I’m a teacher and I love new school supplies..!
I haven’t started BTS shopping yet. Loved it as a kid though – new duotangs and pencils and shoes, oh my!
it was so much fun as a kid- now with this whole adulting thing……are we ever really done!? le sigh!
We are getting my 9 year old ready for grade five. We are trying to repurpose some of last years supplies to save money.
I remember our back to school shopping, we lived on a farm and evry August mom would get out the Army and Navy catalog and we would get to pick out clothes and the supplies we needed
Loved it as a kid. All kinds of new gadgets to choose from. Now as a mom not so much.
As a kid we’d be shopping all summer at differebt places – I loved it. I am paying the fee for my kids to get the package lol!
We just finished up the back to school clothes/shoes shopping today but i still need to get the actual school supplies. I love back to school shopping!
I remember back to school shopping for supplies was exciting! We would have a long list of school things to get ready to return to school and it always took the blah out of going back because we got all these new things.
I liked the moment we were shopping for the school supplies. My mother would always ask what we would love. We were searching for all the things like a treasure hunt! I also loved to choose the new clothes and shoes.
We haven’t started back to school shopping yet, but our tradition each year is one new outfit, backpack, lunchbox, and pencil case!
Haven’t started yet. But as a kid, this was one of my favourite times of the year.
I am very very close to being done the back to school shopping. I still need to get my 19 year some school supplies (just some basics) and my youngest 3 all need new water bottles. My 9 year old needs a new hoodie and probably 2 more pairs of jeans, and we’re ready for September 1.
I loved back to school shopping as a kid! Notebooks, pens, pencils, markers…all of it! I still love stationary to this day.
I’m not in school and the baby isn’t in school but still I love the supplies and accumulate them for “a rainy day”. Well, now there is a child around who will eventually use some of my immense stash!
I actually haven’t started yet. AHHH!
shopping has not started, needing to wait for the list. that dreaded list.
We haven’t started yet.
I loved Back to School shopping when I was a kid. My son is too little yet but hopefully it will be fun for him too!
I am in the midst of helping out my grandson get ready for school , i like helping out when i can thanks for the chance 🙂
I haven’t technically started yet, but I usually shop for school supplies throughout the year.
I remember as a child loving back to school shopping with my mom and sister at Zellers- while I wasn’t excited to go BACK to school (summer holidays with my parents and sis were the best and packed) I loved shopping I guess lol
I need to start BTS shopping but not much energy to do it as our picky folks give me hard time.
I feel super fortunate that I don’t have to do much back to school shopping for my kiddos yet as they are only in SK and Gr2. I know that will change over time. We didn’t have a lot of extra money growing up so my parents always kept it pretty simple too.
I used to do all my bask to school shopping with my Grandma. I think she was the one with the most patience. Haha.
Back to school shopping has always been relaxing for our family as we Homeschool. This year, however, I have one heading off to the local high school and one heading to the other end of the province for university.
my daughter is going in to Grade 10. we haven’t really started back to school shopping yet. she has a list of clothes/shoes she wants; but we don’t really know what school supplies are required, besides the basic binders, paper, pens, etc. i love back to school time – it is my fave time of year – way more than Christmas!
I am a teacher and LOVE back to school shopping! I can stock up cheaply for the year (hopefully!). It gets me excited for a fesh start with all the kids! But I am not done yet:(.
I haven’t started yet. ACK! I usually have it done by now. This summer has been so crazy. I need to take a break and get it done.
With one daughter starting grade 5 and another going away to college (living in residence), this would be extremely helpful and very nice on my bank account lol
Back to school shopping for the first time with my youngest this year! I can’t wait to see his reactions!
I used to love the frenzy of back to school shopping as a kid; I get to pick new clothes!
I love the back to school piles of supplies, the organization and the routine it brings back into our lives. I love the stories the kids bring home the first day and the excitement of seeing their friends again.
I remember back to school shopping as a child with my mother and sister. I always look forward to it , my favourite was new pencil crayon and pastels. I loved drawing back then and I was good at it. When shopping for my children I would start early with the basic watching the sales. Staples is one of my favourite, they have excellent sales.
Just starting with school shopping for my kids! My oldest is starting high school this September. Which is a lot more supplies then her younger siblings. Always start with @staples flyer . this store has amazing strong backpacks and lunch bags my kids love. Amazing prices
We are lucky here, our school does the school supply shopping for a small fee. Our BTS shopping is only for personal items. Love it this way.
I have just started thinking about whatever one needs and taking an inventory of what we already have.
For me back to school is also a back to work time working in schools, so I get all my material for the school year now 🙂
I buy new footwear for my grandchildren for back to school. I wore a uniform to school so no shopping there. I was glad to get back to see friends after a long summer.
back to school shopping gets down throughout the year when I see deals
I’m the weird kid who LOVED back to school and all things stationary! Still do!
I was never happy about back to school as a kid. I wanted summer vacation to last as long as possible so I never went back to school shopping with my parents.
Last year got it done so early. Feeling the pressure this year as August starts to fly by and I got a new baby arriving in October. Eek gotta get things checked off the to-do list ?
I mostly pickup a few things my children have school age children now
Done! Woohoo!
We are almost done buying all the back to school clothes but haven’t started yet on the supplies. My daughter requires new things this year like a geometry set & scientific calculator.
This is Grade 1 for us – just the start of back to school shopping!! Many more years to go…
When it was back to school for me it was a trip to the city with my Mom to by school supplies
We are shopping for backpack right now. We will probably do more stationary shopping towards the end of the month
I was one of those kids who loved back-to-school 🙂 Now we don’t have so much to worry about yet as our son is only in JK 🙂
I tend to pick up items here and there throughout the summer every time I’m at the store.. Makes it a little less overwhelming, and by the end of August I’m DONE!
I pick a night the week before school starts and label everything after the kiddos have gone to bed.. And reward myself with a glass of wine while doing it, of course! 😉
I find the biggest hurdle this year isn’t finding runners, it’s backpacks! That could just be my overly-picky girls though lol
I remember how fun it was to go shopping and pick out one NEW outfit for back to school! I haven’t started yet for my kids but it’s on my mind!!!!
I remember loving all the back to school clothes shopping..school materials… not so much 😛

I am pretty excited to go shopping for my son Jack this year. I will be starting my shopping in a week and he will help me pick out the items.
I’m lucky because I work in a school which gives me an excuse to go back to school shopping for myself! Every year I buy myself a new bag and some cute new outfits as, believe me, the kids notice!*l*
im done no last minute rush for me
Back to school shopping was always my favorite part of summer when I was a kid. Now I have 2 girls, and they love it too! Haven’t started yet, but will soon!
As a kid, we didn’t have a lot of money so we had to use the same crayons (among other school items) until they were used up…. There was nothing more exciting than opening up a brand new box of Crayola Crayons. I still love the smell of the fresh wax Crayola Crayons. 🙂
I remember going shopping for school stuff with my mom and having a blast picking out all the supplies…. then racing home to sharpen all my pencils
I’ve been looking around committed to buying. This is my daughters first year of school and they haven’t mailed the list of things to buy

Can’t wait to go check out all the back to school deals at Staples!

I loved the new notebooks at the beginning of the school year and vowed to keep them neat all year but that only lasted for a few days!
I enjoy back to school shopping for my kids at home & for my classroom! I haven’t even begun yet & in need of a financial boost to get going! Staples is my favourite of all!
I haven’t started BTS yet but we have gone to Staples for our BTS shopping for quite a few years now, they really do make it easy, and rarely did we have an issue with not finding something on our list. (by the way…. they have a lifetime warranty on some of their zip-up binders, and we have had to use it a few times when the zipper or binder breaks in the first week of school) I haven’t been in there yet, but in Moose Jaw, they usually have all the lists from the schools there too, so no need to remember where you put that supply list when the kids brought it home in June!
I always remembered those giant boxes of Crayola crayons. I always tried so hard to not destroy the box that had the built in sharpener…..it never made it till Christmas usually…
I am almost done school shopping. I do a little at a time over the summer to get the best deals!
We usually go 2 weeks before school starts.

I have not started yet, but planning to do it next week.
In middle of shopping. I used to love shopping for supplies back in the day! And then dividing everything up with all my siblings!
I am half done, and hopefully going to finish this week. With three kids going to school this year it’s a slightly bigger job!
Love back to school for my daughter.
I am trying my best to get as many supplies as possible, mostly stocking up on lunch items since that’s the toughest part for me…!
This is my grandson’s first year and we have been making trips to the stores . He loves it . very exciting time
I love back to school shopping. This year I have two little ones starting Kindergarten and I am so excited.
I’m shopping now. I have some of the stuff!
I was always not given new stuff for school rarely actually . So I really do not have any positive memories about back to school . I like utilizing the dollar store though as you really do not need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on back to school stuff.
We are about 75% done with school shopping.
We haven’t started back to school shopping yet
I loved back to school shopping with my dad when I attended school. Staples was always our first stop where I would enjoy picking out my favourite supplies like pens, pencils and binder. It was always a lot of fun for me.
