Emergency Preparedness Week May 1-7

May 1-7, 2016 is Emergency Preparedness Week, and this year, Duracell and the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) have teamed up to remind Canadians that everyone needs to be prepared in an emergency. According to a survey conducted by Duracell in partnership with the CAFC, even though 34% Canadians feel they have experienced more storms and natural disasters in the past five years than ever before, the majority (53%) of Canadians do not have an emergency kit to sustain them up to 72 hours after a disaster strikes.

Duracell Emergency Preparedness Checklist

The Emergency Preparedness Checklist from Duracell, which you can download by clicking the link, includes items like water and non-perishable food which we all think of immediately, but also includes items you may not think to stock like a can opener (seriously, how would we get the cans open, whoops!), a dust-mask, and a whistle to signal for help. Reading over the list I realized I was under-prepared for our household, and made a decision to fix that (Duracell is helping me, thankfully!)

The checklist even gives you tips on how to stock your kit (you should check it every so often to ensure nothing is expired) and how to prepare for an emergency with your family. Why not take a minute this week to download the kit and read it over just in case. It’s always just in case, right?

  • I have an emergency kit in the trunk of my car which has come in handy a couple of times in the winter. I have all the items for an emergency kit in the house but there are not organized. I will be printing off the Duracell checklist.

  • I’ve been meaning to get a kit together.. only have about half that list of items. This checklist will come in handy, thank you.

  • I think it is a great post. We all need to be prepared. This is a very handy kit to have. It should be checked yearly. I had to even create them for my employer so that we had them at the ready in case they were needed.

  • I recently helped with a truck roll-over and it made me realize I need to be more prepared – a kit and proper training is essential.

  • I used to have a kit bit been having a bad couple of years and I must have lost it in one of my moves ?

  • Living on a couple of earthquake faults, we do have some things gathered for an emergency, but our kit is by far, not complete!

  • Emergency Preparedness Check List – always have to think of the “What Ifs”. Example, December in Edmonton – lost “everything….power/phone/heat”. The save all, our fireplace was able to keep the family and house warm. Guess its’ time again to invest in the important stuff.

  • Surprisingly, we don’t have one together. You’d think living in a house with two people who do workplace safety, related to a safety engineer and living near ‘chemical valley’, we’d have one together. This might be the sign to get it together, already. 😀

  • Great post. We don’t have an emergency kit even though I know we should. I really need to get one put together this year.

  • We have some things we need for an emergency but just not in one place. I really need to work on that and prepare one.

  • I think this is a great thing to have on hand. You can never be too prepared for any situation. Thanks for sharing

  • I do not have an emergency kit, and I should, just the way things have been going, you just never know, this is a great post and a checklist, and this would be great to win!!

  • One thing for sure, we never have enough batteries!! And can’t you get those flashlights and maybe radios that you wind up to run? I’m pretty sure we had a flashlight like that. Is the whistle in case you are buried in a tornado and trying to be found? We had those life jackets for the kids that had whistles on them (thankfully never had to be used)

  • I always have an emergency kit in my car but honestly our emergency gear is not organized in our home for quick retrieval. This is a great reminder to be prepared just in case!
