Brought to you by Shomi and TheCo.
A few weeks ago, we had my mom stay with us for a week while my husband and I juggled our work commitments and along with holiday concerts, parties and events. Living two hours away, this visit gave her a glimpse into our chaotic and very busy household. She asked me how we, any of us, got any downtime and I answered as honestly as I could – we find it when we can and take all that we can get.
I love our family movie nights, though they don’t happen as often as I’d like. Still, we try and make a commitment to have them, and then debate what we’ll watch when we do. Checking out Shomi for the first time recently, we had an abundance of movie titles to choose from on our latest movie night.
Shomi is the perfect streaming service for families because, in our busy, chaotic, and active households, I appreciate a streaming service that helps me give my kids quality content while ensuring they only see programming applicable to them.
When you create a Kid’s profile, Shomi makes sure that only C, C8, G, or PG content shows up in searches, recommendations, and homepage spotlight feeds. I love this. Not only does this ensure my kids are only watching content on Shomi that’s just for them, they’re also not seeing any recommendations or search results that I wouldn’t want them to (Revenge, yes it’s on Shomi, is just for me!)
One Shomi subscription can keep up with our entire family of five – that’s because each Shomi subscription can accommodate 6 individual profiles, and can stream on 2 devices simultaneously, plus set-top-boxes for Rogers and Shaw cable subscribers. Each viewer can browse, stream, and build their own “Shomi later” lists which I love! Then, based on these content preferences, Shomi serves up recommendations for future viewing – this is great for kids (and of course parents too!)
When searching for something new for the kids to watch, parents will appreciate how Shomi organizes that content. Look for programming perfect for ages 5 and under (Munchkin Land, where you’ll find Bubble Guppies and Peppa Pig, my four year old’s
picks!), ages 6-9 (Kids Club, where my eight-year-old found The Powerpuff Girls Movie) and ages 10-13 (Tween Hangout, with popular titles like Are You Afraid Of The Dark which my eleven year old watches and it’s not even scary, whatever, in case you
wondered.)
Adults will enjoy the Collections on Shomi, created just like your favorite music playlists are – look for collections to capture a particular mood or style, and you’re set for a weekend binge watching or weeks of viewing. Right now, the Santa Claus Is Coming to Shomi collection is full of great holiday viewing, including A Christmas Story!
Right now you can try Shomi for free too – just sign up before January 31st 2016 and you’ll receive a 2 month trial to experience why Shomi is awesome, Shomi your happy face too!
Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Shomi, but the opinions expressed are my own.
We looked into getting this. We currently have Netflix though and pay for Telus TV (basic tv channels). Is it any different from Netflix? If you had to choose which would you choose, Shomi or Netflix? Im pretty cheap, and onlywould want to be paying for one monthly, so thats why I ask 🙂
I’ve had Shomi now for about 6 mos. I absolutely Love their collections! Especially around Halloween when you’re looking for the best scary movies, or anytime really, depending on what you’re looking for. Christmas also focuses a lot on rom-coms, or just your good old fashioned romances. The reason I got Shomi in the 1st place was because I was spending almost $10.00 Cdn. a movie on On Demand, (with taxes) and at the same price, with 1 mo. free, I loved also binge watching a huge selection of shows my friends had told me about. BUT – my fave Reason now…They STREAM my fav. – “The Walking Dead” lol. It’s a definite price saver and worth it!
I will find out about getting Shomi. Thanks for sharing!
looks like it has good shows, unfortunately I had to cancel my tv to save money
We have shomi free with our Rogers subscription. I find we use Netflix far more often.
This is interesting – we are a family of six so the number of profiles sounds good. As well, I like that you can filter the ratings by profile – makes parental control of shows nice and easy.
we get it free! Awesome! So great for the kids to!
No way!! k i am gonna have to get hubby to look into Shomi more. I have heard of it before but didn’t know too much about it. I love that they have Dora and bubble guppies ! my daughter would flip
I just signed up for a 2 month free trial. So far looks really good and has the shows i’ve been wanting to watch that netflix doesn’t have
They have a great programming selection.
I guess I am one of the few that never heard of this. Looking into it
Thanks for sharng this post,i have heard the name before but didnt know much about thanks for the great review Shomi subscription sounds great for the whole family!
I was curious but iwll sign up now with teh fee 2 month trial!
My hubby got a free preview of Shomi and we loved it! Tons of great shows to watch!
I’ve read some comments about getting it free with Rogers. I’ve been a Rogers subscriber for a number of years and haven’t heard anything about it being free. We subscribe to Netflix anyway.
We have it and the kids enjoy it.
I like that you can create a kid’s profile so that it only shows movies appropriate for them
Dora and the Bubble Guppies use to be on Netflix and my granddaughter always love to watch a show or two on her weekly visit, and now well they are hanging with shomi!
I’ve wondered about Shomi but I wonder if it would be worth it since I don’t have that much time. But it would have been good to watch all the Christmas movies I wanted when I had time and not just when they came on TV
still have yet to try Shomi…….great selection!
lots great shows, will have to look into it! thank you for the review
I am planning to take advantage of the free trial and try this out! My boyfriend says there are a lot of films to choose from on there!
I love that you can make the shows your children watch safe.
This sounds like a great Netflix alternative. Have to check it out!
I have Shomi for free with my Rogers plan, but I rarely use it.
We have watched a few shows on Shomi. There seem to be a number of good choices.
I’ve seen their programs and they’ve covered everything. Love it
I have not had cable or anything like it in years. I dislike paying for it lol and still getting commercials that paying for it was suposed to stop. We have a nice Sony tv which we bought a rotating antenna for local news and programming. With just that we get 12 stations which is all we really need. I rent series I enjoy from the library but I do get tempted to try Shomi or netflix sometimes for my husband. And I am very fond of zombies ! I just might try it out at least if my internet will cooperate. thank you for the review
I think I may just try out the free previews to see what it’s all about.
