It’s no secret that women can do everything men can do. Modern feminism has also paved the way to show that it’s okay for girls and guys to do exactly the same stuff, which is why it probably shouldn’t come as a shock to see that women actually account for over half of all gamers worldwide. THE MAJORITY. So, what are women playing and why has there been such a shift?
Gaming Now > Gaming In The Past
When you thought of gaming several years ago, the chances are you’ll have thought of PlayStation, Xbox or maybe something even more old-school like a Nintendo 64. First person shooter games like Call Of Duty are still hugely popular, as are all kinds of others which people regularly ‘collect’ as part of a series and wait outside gaming stores at midnight for the latest instalment. However, these days, there are a ton of other games which are available, and it’s mostly in thanks to the fact that the Internet and indeed smartphones are of course all the rage. We now have a multitude of choices, in addition to the ones we had before. That’s the beauty!
Online Generation
Today, people are playing tons of games that can be found online, for a multitude of reasons. Boredom, fun, procrastination, love or money all come into play, alongside a good old competitive streak which can be put to good use no matter the game. A lot of sites right here in Canada are opening up the gaming world to the casual gamer, including more and more women! Alongside Bingo, traditionally favored by older generations but now the past-time of people of all ages, there are games of all natures, including those with a stereotypically ‘feminine’ approach to encourage women to get involved. For example, amongst its selection of arcade games, there are a host of 32Red games for Canadian players.
Women are tending to favor options such as ‘Bridesmaids’, which features graphics which may be more appealing to a lot of women and is a slot based game which doesn’t include things like violence like many games so often do! They’re not alone, a lot of gaming sites take the slot approach as opposed to the ‘KILL EVERYTHING IN SIGHT’, such as Sun Bingo and more. 32Red goes that one step further on the female gaming front by directly marketing to women using gender stereotypes (for example, Kitty Cabana).
Of course, there are also games which seem to have men, women and children hooked. Think of Candy Crush for iPhone and Android, for example. There aren’t many people who don’t have this addictive little thing downloaded, and it’s easy to waste HOURS trying to reach that next ELUSIVE level! With the pretty candified background but the competitive nature of the game, it’s hardly surprising that everyone feels able to play along!
Women Aren’t In A Box
However, that’s not to say that women aren’t getting involved with games of all kinds, too! In fact, there are thousands of women around the world whose presence in the gaming world cannot be ignored. In fact, 52% of people who regularly game are women, so the old stereotype of men being the ones at it should just move on! However, as the article points out, women need to be taken into account in the industry in all areas, from the marketing right through to the execution.
For example, women need to feel that they are represented in games, and not just tokenized or fetishized. They need to feel that there are characters who are every bit as interesting and diverse as they are, ready to be strong and kick some butt! Also, time and time again, ‘games for women’ are seen as ‘other’ and not ‘proper’ additions to tech like ‘games for men’. Even more disgustingly, women are even being VICTIMIZED for gaming, and this story ‘#GamerGate’ may even be turned into a movie!

The industry has come a long way in inclusiveness and sites mentioned above with female friendly ones are starting to bridge the gap. But as a whole, the industry is losing out on not just a way to improve its social consciousness, but also its profits! If women are already playing at a time where games aren’t always geared up to include them, imagine how many more would play if they were?!

I have nieces who love their games, me I am not big on it will play the odd game on facebook
I don’t game myself, but my daughter is a total gamer girl. She and my son are both addicts. She is really into Minecraft.
I have not been a big gamer, but after I got married we would have game nights with friends, and I played lots with my boys.
My daughter does play video games, but she’s not quite as addicted a my boys.
My daughter is a big time gamer you have to peal her away from the computer this started a few years back when she suffered from depression
I find the majority of games are slanted towards a male audience but I am also seeing more games that appeal to all genders.
I love playing video games
I don’t play video games but was surprised to learn that women account for over half of all gamers worldwide. I must admit that I though that number would be much lower for women.
My daughter is a big time gamer,me not so much i love the Mario games and play those few times a year
Very interesting! Growing up it was always my friends’ brothers who would game and drag us in when they needed an extra player. I’m glad the tides are turning and there is a greater variety out there.
the girls in our house are more competitive at it too
My three nieces are gamers and and so are their friends.
I admit, I love playing online games! It’s a fun way to pass some down time
I hope to see more women in the CEO positions of gaming companies!
Gaming is fun and it’s not just a guys world!!
I have been a gamer all of my life. I’m happy to see more women in the business and hopefully games will become less misogynistic as a result!
My daughter is into video games just as much as my son
I used to be a gamer, then i had kids LOL! maybe as they get into it when they get older mommy will do the same
Haha! Hubby and I used to play games together all the time, then well we had kids….
Not agamer, but girls are becoming the programmers for these games too!
I have never been much into video games lol I think because I’m not good at them 😛 but I don’t understand why it was ever considered a guy thing anyway!
I love playing games but far from a gamer. I do have a cousin and she’s a gamer.
I love playing games. I can take or leave them though.
My sis is a gamer and has been since she was a kid. I’m glad the world is shifting to see more female gamers. She plays the “games for men” but kicks most of their butts anyways. 🙂 Now she’s a game designer.
My mom, myself and my daughter all do gaming to some extent.
I’m a woman & definitely consider myself a gamer.
I just met a couple who met playing World of Warcraft online. So it’s not all misogyny. But the gaming community can still be an anti-female place.
Video games never interested me and I still don’t see the appeal. My daughter loves them and can’t wait to get an ipad (I have resisted until now). She does enjoy the wii – I am more comfortable with that as she does the dance and fit games!
My girls love games.
I love playing video games.
I liked playing games as a kid but as an adult I am not much of a gamer. A girl I work with is really into it so I am familiar with the gaming world.
My daughters were never into gaming as much my son!!
I grew up gaming (nintendo, super nintendo, N64), my daughter loves it too!
My boys are hooked on video games.

I’m not falling into this category of being a gamer although if I see a PacMan game, I’m there! My son likes to play video games.

My niece loves to play video games. I never really got into them myself.
I loved games this when I was young. Great article
My sons girlfriend (and her mom) is just as much of a gamer as he is……and he’s a HUGE gamer.
I am just casual gamer but know many women who love it
i like video games but I’m just a casual gamer and my daughter is the same way
I play WiiU sometimes with others, but I’m awful at it. I can hardly work the TV remote, let alone a game controller. But my spouse and kids love gaming, my daughter included.
My daughters are obsessed with Minecraft, and Stampy! My eldest daughter did a “what I want to be when I grow up” project at school- she says a YouTuber- times ARE changing!
I used to be a gamer when there was donkey kong or bubble bobble then male dominated games came out. It’s great to see games geared for women again. I’m slowly getting back into gaming
I love the games I have on my iPhone, and my daughter has a few on her iPad that I really enjoy playing.
I like playing video games, but more as a way to connect to Dh than any other reason.
I may be the worst video game plater ever ; (
As a Mom to 3 boys who love to play their games, I noticed that women are not represented as heroes or sometimes even a character in some games! I’m glad things are changing though 🙂
GIRL POWER! 🙂 It’s good to put it out there. We love gaming too! (and we are good at it!)
In my younger years I could definitely beat any guy at video games– I was awesome at all the Mario games & car racing games. Now that I’m a mom I really don’t play much anymore. My daughter plays & now the tables have turned– she beats ME!
I haven’t played video games since unreal tournament , I suddenly developed vertigo/motion sickness playing that game. I have no idea why but just looking at it and the room starts to spin. I loved playing that too! My youngest daughter Grace has applied for gaming design courses at college which is pretty cool. girl power is just as mighty as boy power
Kinda neat! I do like Mario games.
I may have had a slight addiction to farmville a couple years ago! I ended up deleting it because it was getting a little crazy! I love a good game that I dont have to return to in so many hours or minutes though 🙂
I am not much of a gamer. My kids laugh at me at any attempts I make.
I am a wee bit of a gamer when I get the time but my kids are way more into it than me.
I’m not a gamer myself. Give me a crossword or a puzzle anytime.
I am a gamer and have been my whole life.. my daughter loves video games too! =)
I didn’t get into gaming to much. I got hooked more on the internet and doing searches etc. and later doing contests.
This is very interesting! I have never really been interested in video games, but I did love playing Sims on my computer when I first became a mom.
My daughter is a huge gamer – and she’s really, really good! I suck…but whatever, I try and have fun!
My kids play the Super Nintento I grew up with, we all love it.
I liked your Who Runs the (Gaming) World? Girls! post.
My niece loves to play video games.
I play video games almosst daily. Its more of a family orientated thing for this house.
my youngest is 9 and I have to limit how long he plays, I give him one hour a day thats it
So much has changed since I was young. I liked video games but they are so complex now lol
only games i play are nancy drew computer games
I play video games occasionally but my daughter just loves to play!
I find the majority of games are geared towards a male audience but girls are really rising to the challenge
I grew up with Super Mario Bros and have loved many-a-game in my adulthood. No need for it to be just for boys!!
Girl power!!! I like playing video games but I’m not a huge gamer. Same with my kids
I agree! I am a gamer and will probably always be.
I never really got into gaming but my girls love it
I LOVE video games!! It started when I was a kid, and my bestie got me a nintendo. Now, my fiance and I have a weekend every so often where we get snacks, takeout, and just play to our hearts content. It’s still one of my fave things to do when I’m home sick.
I was lucky that the guys in my group (there was usually only 1 or 2 other girls at any given time) were pretty cool – not touchy feely, and other than occasional jokes about my breasts and bum, they were cool guys!
So many of the men in that community are real douchebags. And that’s being kind about it.
I just restarted Dragon’s Age: Inquisition on XBONE – going to have to go home and play some more tonight! 🙂
I like how there are games that are geared towards both genders (Final Fantasy, etc). Girl gamers rule 😛
I’m a gamer and proud of it! I like all games, not just what is “geared for women”. I’ll kick my husband’s butt in any game, any day! lol.
Not a gamer unless you count pac man. LOL
I wonder what the numbers are on female:male game programmers and developers. If women were designing and selling, one would think the games would be on target with the market!
I’ve been gaming forever, starting with arcade style games then home consoles. I can keep up with the best of them, and I’m pretty certain that’s why I have great hand and eye co-ordination, and thanx to candy crush, a constant craving for candy! lol
I have always been a big gamer, ever since i was little. I love Mario and Yoshi games the most.
As a kid I loved to play video games. AND I was really good at it.
