Now that fall is officially here, the first snowfall isn’t far off. Once the ground is covered, I know I’m not alone when I start daydreaming about a sandy beach and a warmer climate. We have two sunny vacations planned for January – one as a family and one as a couple – and yes, I’m counting down the days already!
The weak Canadian dollar doesn’t give many of us confidence in booking a trip south, I get that, but there are ways you can save money and travel more in 2016. You just have to be savvy with your plans and choices, and here’s how:
1. Start thinking of every day ways you can save more and spend less. It can be as simple as cutting out your daily drive-through coffee, or figuring out how to swap dresses with your girlfriends to avoid buying a new one for the next big event. I offered some tips on saving more money earlier in 2015 that you can reference for a great start!
2. Utilize rewards cards and programs that focus on travel. Swap your credit card for one that offers travel points, and ensure you’re using your travel rewards and points cards faithfully. I can’t tell you how many times I’m in line at a checkout and the person before me doesn’t have a rewards card and simply shrugs when asked. I don’t understand why people don’t like saving money! Promise yourself you’ll sign-up for rewards programs and then remember to always use your rewards cards – you’ll be surprised how quickly they can add up.
3. Talk to a travel agent early and let them know your vacation goals. It helps having someone scope out travel deals for you, and this way you can focus on all the other money saving strategies here! Also, don’t forget to make room for travel insurance in your plans, this is a non-negotiable part of smart travel, after all losing money if you have to cancel your trip or spending money on a trip-injury are definitely not helpful to the bottom line of spending less and traveling more!
4. Consider shorter holidays for maximum savings. Some cruises offer 4-day sails, and a weekend getaway to Las Vegas for example can go a long way to recharging your spirit. While a 7-10 day holiday is a definite bonus in the dreary winter months, a less expensive and shorter holiday can keep your bank account and you happy.
5. Don’t hang out with the Joneses! In other words, while it may feel like everyone else is traveling and you’re not realistically we know that’s not the case. Don’t put yourself in debt to satisfy that FOMO (fear of missing out!) Find alternate vacation ideas, and if your ideal holiday is out of budget for 2016, start planning now to make it happen in a year. Little getaways help break up that winter chill, even a staycation at a hotel in your area! We’ll get through this winter even if we have to create a beach day ourselves in a hotel pool!
Great read! Thanks for the tips 🙂
Good tips. Great idea to plan ahead and work towards the vacation you want, even if you can’t have it this winter. Going on a paid-for vacation is better than a vacation on credit. I think it’s more enjoyable that way.
I need a vacation so bad but won’t be for a very long time good tips though thanks
Great tips!
Great tips!! my hubby and I are going to start saving a little from each pay so our family can go somewhere next year 🙂
Great tips. Reward cards do pay off but you have to be in control of your spending and pay off the card monthly.
Great tips!
I have been saving for a trip to Vegas, by putting everything I have sold on Facebook buy and sell and having a garage sale. I am pumped!
Thanks for the other tips.
Hubby is not a traveller so I highly doubt we will go anywhere in the next year. Maybe a trip to the sister in law’s cottage but that is about it. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for sharing. I agree about earning points. It adds up.
Sounds like you’re going to have a pretty fantastic January! I agree that #5 is probably the most important tip though. Don’t keep comparing as it will steal your joy in the present.
Using rewards is a great way to get a cheaper/ free vacation
My family wants to go somewhere special next year and we’ll definitely follow these tips!
Great article…thank you for the tips.
Great article
Wonderful tips! I really should look into some short getaways – that is a wonderful idea to break up the same old !
I am always surprised at in this day and age of the internet what an agent can still find for you!
Those are great tips! I love travelling and hope to get the chance to next year!
Great advice! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks for teh tips!
always have travel insurance!!! Even if you going for a day trip, you should have it. I work in a hospital and people can lose their life savings just by one incident.
Great tips thank you
Good tips! I also would like to travel more in 2016!
awesome tips , thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks for the great tips
I love to travel and your tip on the rewards cards is great !
#5 is my favorite tip – Completely agree! 🙂
I like the tip: shorter holidays – mini getaways are JUST as fun and often more do-able!
I like the idea of really understanding your vacation goals.
I won my last trip to Vegas. I’m trying to replicate that, only on a European scale :0
Great tips, we could use a vacation
We would love to take a wonderful family trip next year.
Great tips and could not agree more about travel insurance. Looking forward to our Disney Cruise with the entire family in 2016
I love to utilize the rewards programs and I have enjoyed trips using this perk.
Some great tips! Hoping 2016 will be the year of our first family vacation!
great tips – we really want to travel more next year 🙂
great tips, I think we need to save a lot more in order for us to travel more next year
Thanks for these great tips Tenille as i can always save on travel!
Great tips! I’m already saving up for a major trip in 2016. Ever cent counts 🙂
Great tips! We do take a lot of shorter vacations to help cut costs.
We’re having a baby at the beginning of 2016 so we won’t be doing much for trips anyway! My husband and I are going away just the two of us before baby comes though! It’s just a 3 days, 2 nights trip but shorter is better than not at all. The FOMO definitely seems to be a big thing for some people and it’s important to remember that social media doesn’t normally show all the saving and planning that goes into other people’s trips.
We want to travel more of our home province.. so much we haven’t seen yet!
These tips are smart and I will pass them on. I would like to go somewhere next summer maybe up north its gorgeous .
My tip is to plan it out as soon as possible and ravelfunds for
Great tips and hope to travel more in 2016
