Barbie: You Can Be Anything

I’m a big fan of Barbie, and can say that I have been for about 34-or-so years now. I have some really fond memories of Christmas gifts involving Barbie including a Barbie Dreamhouse for Christmas that I played with for years. Now that my girls (8 and 4) are both playing Barbies, I’m happy to indulge them. It’s easy to pick up a new Barbie or some accessories while out with the girls to add to their collection and keep them busy.

The latest Barbie campaign, with a video that’s gone viral on social media, has made me cheer. You Can Be Anything highlights how imaginative play with Barbie helps girls grow and realize that yes, there is no glass (ahem, plastic for Barbie) ceiling and anything is possible. Right now, my daughters change their minds on what they want to be as often as they change their favorite color (they’ve decided that’s something you should do monthly, for some reason). I’m OK with that, because I want them to know that nothing is impossible. Whether they want to be a teacher, singer, or veterinarian (top picks recently), they can do it. Sure, when I was little that sentiment was out there, but I didn’t see women holding the positions they do today whether it’s in science, government or the entertainment industry. I’m happy I live in a time when the statement is true, and not just fluff – you CAN be anything.
