The Perfect Homemade Treat

While driving on the long weekend, I heard an interesting comment on the radio. It was about striving for perfection and how, actually, the definition of perfect isn’t what we’ve become accustomed to understanding.

per·fect
adjective
absolute; complete (used for emphasis)

Perfect doesn’t mean something is better than others, without fault or flaws and an unattainable achievement. Perfect simply means it’s complete. Done. I love this applied to most anything but most certainly in regards to life with kids. I’ve been working on getting the kids more involved in the kitchen, and it’s been a rewarding process. Cooking isn’t as precise as baking so we started there.

I’ve found a great way to encourage the kids to help with baking without the chaos of an overwhelming amount of ingredients or eighteen measuring spoons. Robin Hood Quick Bread mixes are available at your local grocery store in five varieties: Banana Flavoured, Chocolate Chip, Lemon Poppy Seed Flavoured, Cinnamon Swirl, and Gluten Free Banana Flavoured. The mess is limited because you only need to add three ingredients (water, oil and eggs) and you can take it from pantry to in the oven in less than five minutes. Of course, if you want to be brave you can also add other ingredients as well (like nuts to the banana bread or you can make muffins instead of a loaf, adding jam inside!)

Check them out the next time you’re picking up groceries, and take a moment to make the “perfect” snack for your family, with little mess or frustration.
