Hit ‘Em Where It Hurts

mosquitoLiving in Saskatchewan, we joke that we have a provincial bird. It’s called the mosquito. Our population of mosquitoes can get so big in numbers and size, that summers are often spent battling them, waging war as the case may be. If there’s a product out there, we’ve all likely tried it. Some of us have our favorites (citronella candles for some, a brand of body wash or oil that’s rumored to work for others, or good old Deet infused sprays).

I thought I had heard and tried it all until I learned about the GreenStrike Mosquito Preventer.

It kind of takes what we are used to when battling mosquitos and turns it upside down. While the city and municipalities do work to prevent mosquitoes, as a homeowner we’re left with the aftermath – dealing with the mosquitoes once they arrive.

The Mosquito Preventer featuring Zero-Hatch Technology captures and destroys mosquito eggs, and helps to lower mosquito populations, instead of dealing with mosquitoes after they hatch. This way, you hit ’em where it hurts and eliminates them!

Basically, as the illustration above explains, the GreenStrike Mosquito Preventer replicates a pond (and we know how much mosquitoes love ponds) and even includes a product that attracts them to the pond like area. I love that you give the Mosquito Preventer the start and the mosquitoes unknowingly help make it stronger.

GreenStrike Mosquito Preventer

Set up is super easy, and the GreenStrike Mosquito Preventer works on batteries (included) so you can place it anywhere in your yard. The ideal spot for it, as recommended on the site, is an area with shade, vegetation, and low-wind. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in that environment, so “hello!” when they arrive in this perfect area, the Mosquito Preventer will be like a haunted hotel waiting for them to visit.

Let’s talk price. The GreenStrike Mosquito Preventer is available at Home Hardware locations for $299.99. More than a bug zapper or citronella candle, but longer lasting year after year, and preventative rather than combative after the fact. You do have to buy refill kits every 30 days in the summer (about $21.99) but if you’re serious about your mosquito battle, this seems like an efficient way to go.

So far this year, our mosquito count has been low in Regina, but I know it’s coming. I feel good knowing that we’ve got something in our yard to help prevent eggs before they hatch. Of course the ideal would be if all our neighbors did the same, so while I know that’s not possible I have to hope that our own attempts will help in our own yard.

  • This would be so great for us. We have a lot of mosquitoes around here and they are big guys too.

  • Summer fun in Canada means mosquitoes unfortunately – here’s one way to combat them when out and about. We use Bite Me, a mint scented repellant made in Newfoundland

  • wow how clever! i need to tell my mom about this for when they go to their cottage every weekend

  • I LOVE this product!! Better than those strips of tape you hang and end up getting stuck to your head in the dark, or those Citronella candles, which I am convinced mosquitoes love to huddle around! There is nothing worse than mosquitoes, well black flies out East, but other than that, we have had to leave nightly soccer games or cover up everything but our eyes and those mosquitoes still get through and bite or suck, well they just suck!! 🙂 sorry for the rant 😉

  • This would be awesome to own, as it stands now we can’t sit outside for about an hour at night, the little buggers are so bad, I would totally use this, and guard it with my life..lol

  • They are especially bad in the evening at our place and it gets a little hazardous if you want to be out with the kids. I’d love to try this.

  • This is such a great idea! Sometimes they are so bad in our yard that we can’t even sit out at all!

  • This would be great for my back yard, we live near a pond and we get a lot of mosquitos. I could see that this could be a must bring to all of the parties in the neighborhood.

  • mosquitoes aren’t that bad this year bc its been so dry- but normally they are horrible, especially at the lake- this would be awesome at the lake

  • I could only wish that it could be feasible to put theses in parks. I dread taking the dogs out for their walks some nights. Too many mosquitoes! But the would be perfect for my patio though!

  • We could definitely use this as well as we get a ton of mosquitoes where we live. At that price, though, we would definitely chain it down so that it doesn’t disappear in the night – :).

  • To be honest, in print it sounds good, but still does not replace bug zappers and citronella candles. It says it has to be placed away from the outdoor living area so you would still need the other items to protect you while you were outdoors because every mosquito is not going to go right to the Green Strike Mosquito Preventer when it is on. The numbers in their website sound good saying over 2,000,000 eggs killed but Mosquitos can lay up to 300 eggs at a time. I just think it’s quite a bit of money to pay when you still need other precautions as well to protect the family from Mosquitos.

  • Your provincial bird has invaded Newfoundland can you please come and collect them…..lol….I think they came because we are getting quite a bit of rain.
    This product sounds amazing.

  • Now this is something I need to look into! I wouldn’t go as far to say that our provincial bird is the mosquito but they can get quite bad! It’s amazing how they seem to come from no where and most times you don’t even feel them until you go into the house. I can deal, if I have too but I need something to protect my little guy when we’re out in the yard. Thanks for a great review!

  • Mosquitos love me. If anyone else is around they are safe. This would be a great product to own.

  • I have read a few reviews about this. Would love to try one, but the price point is a little too high for me.

  • I have never heard of this until reading about it on your blog. It seems like a great apparatus!

  • This is such an innovative invention. The creators of this really put a lot of thought into how to attract & destroy mosquitoes through their own life cycles. I love when something like this becomes available on the market that’s a total game changer for such an annoying problem!

  • Summer fun in Canada means mosquitoes unfortunately – make sure you wear repellent especially around twilight.

  • The back part of our backyard is like a marsh in early summer, so we get tons of nasty biting bugs. This would be awesome.

  • I made my own fly repellent this year using essential oils. I really like it and it is certainly healthier than anything with deet. I would really like to get something for outside the prevents the little buggers!

  • Mosquitos are always so bad out here in the summer time. I would love to try this for sure, thanks for the chance to win

  • The mosquitoes head straight over to my hubby and grandson and we’ve tried everything else to keep them away from them, so thanks very much for the tip, we’ll have to try it too!

  • Very neat product seems like it would at least limit them .. I dunno if it would mean none of them though

  • This is a must have for my backyard. I love sitting outside in the evenings, but hate being bitten by these little blood suckers. Thank you for the great post. Until reading this, I had no idea this product was available.

  • Very interesting how this works! We can’t even use our backyard this year, the mosquitos are so bad. This would be perfect for us!

  • awesome idea, my back yard could really use this , so we can be outside in the gazebo more , i always run inside as soon as i get bit by a mosquito

  • This is a great idea. The mosquitoes are AWFUL in N Ontario this year. I haven’t been out blueberry picking yet, but am dreading the bugs. I may have to wear a full bug jacket in 35 degree heat. But it’ll be worth it for the berries…

  • Interesting. Winnipeg is the last city in Canada to still use malathion to try & control our mosquito population. I’d much rather use something like this & stay away from known poisonous chemicals!

  • This would be so incredible for around the house and camping , the bugs are horrible , this would make our lives so much better , great product for sure !

  • This is a fantastic invention. I look forward to reading this fall about how your trap worked during the summer. It will go on my wish-list.

  • This would be so wonderful to have! Mosquitos here are something else – I swear they get bigger every year 🙂

  • This is so necessay. Nothing worse than eating outside in the summer evening and being eaten alive by mosquitoes

  • Mosquitos are feisty this years, and HUGE! This is a brilliant item to have, I gotta let hubby know about it!

  • I get eaten alive whenever I go out there…. ugh! this sounds like a cool device, definitely hit them before they spread!

  • This is a very cool contraption! We don’t get enough mosquitoes here in Victoria to use this but on the mainland they sure would love it!

  • This would be an amazing addition to my backyard. Now if only I could find something that would eliminate Yellow Jacket Wasps too, I’d be set for life! 🙂

  • What a useful gadget! My wife constantly attracts mosquitoes and this would save her from all the bites!
