Having received an advanced copy of the movie, my husband and I settled in to watch McFarland this past weekend. After the success of Disney’s Million Dollar Arm last year, I think they may be on to something. People love feel-good movies, and sports movies seem to hit the mark sharing the underdog’s story, and most times that story results in a victory (that would be the feel-good part!)

What McFarland does is also remind all of us the importance of mentors, of community and what it means to be part of a family. After watching it we both agreed that our oldest (11) would like the story as well, so this is a great family movie for older kids (you know, at that point when the last thing they want to do is have a “family” movie night). McFarland wins it with a great storyline, teachable moments, and an entertaining movie without a single explosion or dinosaur in site (this is where I could make a joke about Kevin Coster but I like him.)
