How Your School Can Be More Eco-Friendly #PowerEco

This month I’ve been sharing details on an amazing contest from Staples, where 10 schools are each going to win $25,000 in technology simply by entering the Staples Superpower Your School Contest!

It’s encouraging to see how schools are doing their part for our planet and our future – think back to when we went to school, parents. Yeah, I cringe too!

Here are some great initiatives from Staples that help schools across Canada be more green:

Canada School Recycling Program
Every year 300 million ink cartridges end up in North American landfills. Staples Canada encourages schools across the country to participate in this program by signing up to receive a free ink cartridge collection bin. Order a free ink cartridge recycling bin for your school and help us collect and divert 100,000 cartridges by Earth Day 2015 with the Canada School Recycling program.  For details and to register for your free ink bin visit www.canadaschoolrecycling.ca

Battery Recycling Program for Schools
Staples Canada partners with Call2Recycle to offer customers a used battery (rechargeable and single use) recycling program in all Staples stores.  Schools are invited to collect batteries, hold collection events and encourage all students to bring used household batteries to reduce the amount of electronic waste in landfills. Drop off the batteries collected at any Staples store near you. For more information visit www.call2recycle.ca/staples-schools

Writing Instruments
Staples stores nationwide have partnered with TerraCycle® and Newell Rubbermaid® to collect and recycle used writing instruments. Schools are encouraged to bring in used writing instruments to any Staples store and help provide a second life to these writing instruments by turning them into upcycled and recycled products such as park benches, waste bins and more. And, for every Sharpie, Paper Mate, Expo and uni-ball writing instrument received, TerraCycle will donate two cents to Earth Day Canada.

Electronics Recycling
In an effort to divert eight-million pounds of electronic waste from landfill sites annually, Staples has partnered with eCycle Solutions on an electronics drop-off program. Now operating in almost all Canadian retail locations, recyclable items accepted include PDAs, cell phones, computers, computer parts and more. To view a complete list of collection sites and accepted recyclable hardware visit www.staples.ca/environment

The schools that enter the contest do not have to participate in any of the above programs to qualify – I’m positive many are going to have their own unique programs that the rest of us can learn from ourselves!  These are some great programs from Staples to help all schools (and perhaps your office too!) be more environmentally-friendly.

Do you know if your child’s school has entered yet? Hurry, they only have until January 31st to enter, and you can certainly reference (and email!) my posts here and here to your child’s teacher to ask them to get involved. $25,000 in technology would be such a boost to any school! Good luck everyone!
