The closer we get to Christmas, the more I feel a sense of panic creeping up. It shouldn’t be that way, and I try my best to stay on top of that anxiety because that’s certainly not what the holiday season is all about. This week, my mom is here visiting and we’ve been busy making cabbage rolls and holiday baking on top of ensuring I get to my kid’s Christmas concerts and dinners with friends. Oh, and then there’s this blog I have, have you heard of it?
Betty Ann Heggie’s latest blog post came at just the right time. Titled Sail Through The Holiday Season, Betty Ann shares some tips on ways to increase your energy this season and spend that energy in ways that are fulfilling and not draining. As she explains, “What catches my sail might leave you stranded at the dock.”
I’m going to channel Popeye The Sailorman. Betty Ann shares, “The epitome of resiliency is the cartoon character ‘Popeye the Sailorman’ who famously said, “I Yam What I Yam”. He knew who he was and made no apologies as he downed cans of spinach to replenish his strength.
You can follow his lead and find ways to replenish your energy by being who you are and finding your own personal energy boosters. It is the sure way to sail smoothly and successfully through the holiday season.”
I do like that attitude. While we want to give of ourselves as much as we can during the holidays, it’s important to be true to yourself and focus on the ways I find energy and avoid the ways I deplete it. I need my “spinach”! My energy boosters come from down-time with my husband watching Netflix in the evenings, a nice bubble bath with a good magazine and good food shared with friends. I’m going to get more “spinach” in my life this month indeed.
I encourage you to read Betty Ann’s post this holiday season (you know, in between the shopping, wrapping and baking!) – I think you’ll find some great insight and tips to help keep the wind in your sails.
