I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like fall. Whether it’s the abundance of pumpkin everything or the change of season bringing about a return to routines, people are generally happy in the fall months. Perhaps it’s because we know what’s next, and living on the Canadian prairies we know all too well that in just another month or two we’re going to be plunged into some bitterly cold temperatures.
Sitting beside my natural-gas fireplace, a huge favorite feature of our new house, it doesn’t escape me how fortunate we are to live in the province and country we do. While our winters are certainly frosty, we have an abundance of resources to help us cope, and it’s actually astounding how much of our daily products and lifestyle practices are as a result of our oil and gas industry in Canada.
Earlier this year, a market research study suggested a large portion of the Canadian population didn’t know or care much about the oil and natural gas industry. Being that Canada is the 5th of petroleum products worldwide, this is concerning. With an industry so abundant in our country, yet
misunderstood in some aspects, CAPP is helping to educate Canadians about the oil and gas industry.
I learned, while sitting beside my cozy fireplace in my nice warm house while keeping my bare feet cozy in a pair of slippers and wrapped in a blanket that I was virtually surrounded by products made as a result of the oil and gas industry.
In one regular day of my mommy-life here in Saskatchewan, I found an immense number of products made as a result of petroleum and gasoline. In fact, I came across no less than twenty products before I even stepped out of my bathroom to start my day! I bet you’ll be surprised by a few products I came across before even started my day this week:
Shower curtain
Shampoo bottle
Body wash
Soap
Deodorant
Hand lotion
Toothbrushes
Toothpaste
Hair comb
Clothing
Eyeglasses
Candles
Lipstick
Hair coloring
Linoleum under my feet
Shaving Cream
Rubbing alcohol
Bandages
Hair Curlers
Slippers
That’s twenty items without leaving my bathroom that I found made with petroleum and oil products. To say that the oil and gas industry in Canada has a huge impact in our daily lives is an understatement, yet many people think of simply heating our homes or driving our cars as a direct impact from the industry.
The oil and gas industry in Canada not only employs 550,000 people in Canada (direct and indirect) but also makes payments towards the government that average $18 billion per year, which of course then goes towards our roads, infrastructure and social programs. Living in western Canada, I’m acutely aware of how the oil and gas industry impacts our province’s employment and overall success. The oil and gas industry makes up 20% of the value of Canada’s main stock exchange, the TSX. This is returned to investors and shareholders.
I think if Canadians understood the vast impact of the oil and gas industry beyond what we hear in the news or in debate in the editorials of newspapers, we’d care more than the survey statistics shared. An awareness campaign is a spectacular idea – we certainly can’t make any judgement calls on our opinion of an industry we don’t understand and I myself know better than to let someone else form my opinion for me.
After reading my short list, how have you used oil and gas products in your life already today?

That is a crazy list. I use all of those. Who knew so many products utilized petroleum products!
I certainly would’t wanna go without heat this winter …I have a pellet stove and also a wood stove heats our home . the wood stove is awesome for power outages 🙂
I would have to re-convert my gas fireplace back to wood….and purchase down-filled coats and boots.
I would freeze if I had to do with heat the winter. We have electric heat, but it still takes fuel for the plants to help generate the heat.
Unfortunately we are all too reliant on petroleum and gasoline, thankfully our heating/cooking is based on electricity and I have an electric power bike for transport
I would build a fire and/or freeze.
I have used all of the products on your list. I had no idea that these products were made with petroleum and oil products.
We use a wood stove to heat our home .its great for power outages 🙂
That is quite a list… kind of scary. What would I do without HEAT? Brrr… I would wear thick warm socks, long johns, cuddle more, exercise more , have more hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Wow. I would be busy. lol
You could not survive a winter in Canada without heat. Lots of blankets, warm drinks
That would be horrible not having heat in the winter. I have radiant heating in my condo and rarely turn it on.
I can’t imagine being without heat this winter. How many layers of cloths and blankets would I have to use to keep warm? We live in the north and just would not survive without heat.
we surely would freeze, love this fireplace, in my addition the folks who built it never put heat in it and I would love an electric fireplace in there.
You bring a good point up = it is everywhere and people need to be aware of it when they say its all bad!!
Did not realize or think about the face that petroleum is in so many products.
If I could I would live in a log cabin In the woods lol….I am surrounded by products using pertrolium and oils…saddly
We would freeze if we didn’t have heat this winter.. We have a kerosene heater if the power goes out for heat.. But I hate the smell of it and I am scared to use it by myself.
Ive used more then I thought I did thats for sure.
I’m lucky, we have a wood stove, so wouldn’t have to do without heat
I definitely wouldn’t want to go without heat this winter, that would just be miserable. We only have electricity as our heat source and have had to go without a couple times for several hours when the power has been out and it is not fun. It is amazing how many things we need petroleum for.
I love heat I can’t imagine being without heat this winter. But we just installed an outdoor wood heater. Now have to get firewood:)
This list is crazy. All the stuff touches our skin and sometimes goes into our mouths.
We definitely rely heavily on oil and gas and in some ways, it points to a need to really diversify our energy supplies. It’s not sustainable.
I cant imagine not having heat or eletricity to get us through this coming winter. Though, we do have a wood burning stove in our home and garage and enough generators.. that would only last so long.
I can’t even imagine being without heat, not only do we need it for warmth but also to keep the water pipes from freezing and bursting
I agree we are very reliant on petroleum products. We would have to bundle up as they did years ago without heat.
It is crazy how much we use… this post makes me want to turn on my fireplace too! 🙂
I couldn’t imagine life without gas and electricity. We have a gas fireplace but it would still be mighty cold!
Life without gas and electricity,it would be a disaster
Who would have thought so many things have petroleum and oil products in them.Wow! That’s an impressive list and a big eye opener for me.This was a good read.Thank you for the information.
I’d freeze, we don’t have a fireplace in our house.
love warmth!!
I really want a fireplace in my house but not until I move
Id make a fire
I have definitely used like 90% of those items on a daily basis!! I would love to have a gas fireplace =) some day!!
Ive used so many today already, wow. I had no idea.
Wow – that’s an amazing list. The petroleum industry is so important to our daily life. We need to make sure that we recognize this.
I read the first sentence and chuckled as I appear to be the only person that says autumn is her least favourite season!
It is not that chilly where I live so a blanket would probably do the trick.
I love being warm for too much to even consider not having heat – winter OR summer!
I really had no idea so many items were using petroleum products. Thank goodness for heat!!
Wow, this is so eye opening! I did not know that petroleum was in so many products! we use our furnace for 5-6 months out of the year so we definitely depend on using petroleum
What a cosy looking little fire. Thing like Styrofoam have it in it too.
I have a wood stove and hot water heat.
That’s so crazy to think about, these are products most of us use at least once a day, ive never really thought of it like this before, thanks for the list
I couldn’t imagine being without heat. I would stock up on blankes and warm socks.
Wow what a list! I had no idea!
That is quite a list and just from one room. Actually, here in Victoria, you can get away without turning on the heat for most if not all of the winter.
I don’t even want to think what winter would be like without heat. Wow! That is indeed quite the list.
i would break out the furs and be all caveman. then i would head to my mom’s place.
