Did you know (I totally know you didn’t…) that Shell Canada’s operations alone produces enough energy to each day to meet the world’s oil demand for more than 4 minutes?
Each day. The entire planet. That’s seven billion people!
Today, roughly 98% of Canada’s oil production comes from the oil sands. Living in western Canada, the oil sands industry has a huge impact on our business industries and families. We depend on it. We protect it, and yes we get a little bit frustrated when negative attention is brought to it. Clearly, producing oil sands resources responsibly is important to Canadians too – after all, we live next to them! Shell is confident in a future where Canada can be a leader in both energy and the environment (and where environmental technology can give us a global advantage).
When you think about it, energy is crucial to life as we know it. When we think of how energy is used in our daily lives, certainly heating our houses and driving vehicles (even taking public transportation) come to mind. Thousands of basic necessities, consumer products and services are made possible by energy. So, it’s important to not only use energy efficiently, but yes – appreciate where it comes from and the impact energy production has in our daily lives.
To help Canadians understand how energy impacts our lives, Shell Canada is hosting a pretty amazing contest and is literally asking you to dream. That’s right – they want Canadians to tell them what your dream energy experience would be and they’ll be awarding one lucky entry $25,000 to help make that dream a reality. When you think about it (and I know the wheels are turning right now) whatever your dream experience is – energy is involved.
I think, given the chance, I would take that money and make my dream energy experience one of buying a camper trailer and then visiting the same campground my mom and dad took me too when I was a kid. I have such great memories of camping with them, just enjoying the peace of nature and of course the beach (and the ice cream treats in the evenings when we’d walk to the beach front store!) I think it would be so beneficial for my own kids to have that camping experience.
Certainly energy is needed in many aspects of this energy dream – gasoline to get the camper to it’s destination and then of course a campsite with electricity as well (hello, I’m camping not being a cavewoman, sheesh!) But, in the same breath, we can also get back to nature, cook over a campfire and not rely on energy sources in the way we would if we were in the city at home.
In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I don’t have to win a contest to make my dream a reality. And maybe that’s one of the benefits of a contest like this – asking you to dream and consider the possibilities which then plants seeds of action later.
You can check out what other people are dreaming about, and see how integral and unexpected energy is in our lives at http://www.shell.ca/e47b. The contest closes September 30th, 2014 so there’s still time to think about what your energy dream would be and enter to win $25,000 to make it a reality! How would you would use energy creatively and responsibly to make it happen?
