Four words stopped me dead in my tracks and my world seemed to stand still as I heard my dad say, “I have skin cancer”. I couldn’t believe my ears, “Now this” I thought after his ordeal with prostate cancer. As it turns out, my dad has the most frequent occurring type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, which affects between 50 to 60,000 people each year in Canada. This non-metastasizing, or non-spreading, skin cancer is the result of cumulative years of UV exposure. While his cancer can be treated, due to early detection, it is likely something he will continue to battle for years due to the cumulative sun damage on his skin.
While avoiding ultraviolet light is the best way to prevent skin cancer, most of us cannot avoid our time outdoors or in the sun. Fortunately, sunscreen is the next best way to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays. According to the Canadian Cancer Society the effectiveness of sun screen in prevention of skin cancer is dependent on three key factors.
1. The spectrum of UV Radiation absorbed
2. The amount of sunscreen applied and
3. The frequency of application.
