It seems like we were just getting the kids ready for back to school – I blinked – and here we are planning for the holidays already!
While holiday baking is on my to-do list (I could replace a meal with dessert squares and a big glass of milk and be quite satisfied!) we’ve been having fun preparing for the holidays in a way only kids can. How?
We’ve partnered with Kellogg’s Rice Krispies and tried out one of the Rice Krispies Toys treats recipes found at RiceKrispies.ca! Did you know that – in an amazing partnership with The Salvation Army – Kellogg’s will make a donation of $20 to the Salvation Army for every Rice Krispies Treat picture uploaded to RiceKrispies.ca?
With the donation in mind and a curiosity for how exactly Rice Krispies could be turned into a zooming race car, we attempted the Race Car Toy recipe.
I like making Rice Krispies treats with the kids because it’s a no-fail recipe. Rice Krispies, butter/margarine, marshmallows and a touch of vanilla is all that’s needed to make delicious easy Rice Krispies treats. When looking at the Race Car Toy recipe, I figured it was relatively easy because it involved just a few rectangles (and a lot of icing and decorations!)
Thankfully, I was right! My 5 year old helped in the Rice Krispies recipe prep, and then her 2 year old sister joined her in the decorating. While the original photo showcases a car with black and white designs, we opted for red licorice tires (wouldn’t red tires be the coolest ever?) and a purple sparkly spoiler!
I like being able to take some time in the kitchen with my girls (and my son, though he’s more interested in food prep than treat prep, at 9). It gives me the opportunity to teach them skills like measuring, following directions, and of course being patient waiting for everything to cook. The girls enjoy the one-on-one time with mom and feeling like they’re making a contribution to our table, which they really are! They’re so proud of their work when we bake together and this Rice Krispies Race Car Toy was no exception.
The best part of our experience making this car was when their older brother decided the car was indeed cool and it was time to eat it. “No way,” countered my feisty girls, “Get your own car!” I couldn’t help but laugh. Girls and cars? Indeed. Especially if they have a purple sparkly spoiler!
Visit RiceKrispies.ca to submit a photo of your Rice Krispies toy shaped treat and keep up on Twitter with everyone’s photos and ideas by following the #treatsfortoys hashtag!
