A Pregnant Mom’s Top 10 Tips

Lisa DuttonThis post is brought to you by blog contributor Lisa…

As I wait for baby number 2 to arrive, here is a list of things I personally learned from my son, Jesse.

1 — Get as much rest as possible ‘before’ the baby arrives. I know you are anxious and uncomfortable, but this is your chance! Even if you can’t sleep, put your feet up and relax.

2 — Don’t do anything drastic to your hair during pregnancy, or immediately after. It looks great! You are not thinking clearly.

3 — Try not to buy too many clothes for the baby until you meet him or her. I bought my son a bunch of stuff for newborns and he came out 10 pounds. He was already too big for half of it!

4 — Don’t give your baby name weird spelling. It may seem cool… but they will spend their whole lives correcting people.

5 — Be sure not to ‘over-bath’ your newborn. I bathed my son everyday, and his skin became very irritated. A few times a week is perfect.

6 — If you are questioning what size of Pampers to buy; size ‘up’. I found a bigger diaper offered even better protection.

7 — Keep a diaper change kit and a spare set of clothes in your vehicle at ALL times. And keep a Pampers ‘Splasher’ and towel in your vehicle in the summer… impromptu swims and spray parks pop up!

8 — Your husband is learning too. Try not to get too annoyed with him. He will never look hotter than he does holding your baby.

9 — Find a babysitter you like, and who sincerely loves your child.walmart pampers

10 — The cleaning and laundry can WAIT. Snuggle while you can.

In the spirit of sharing and learning, last month Walmart Canada and P&G began sponsoring a series of prenatal programs in hospitals and community centres countrywide by providing soon-to-be parents with special gift bags with Pampers product. The reusable Walmart gift bags include a package of Pampers Swaddlers, a sample of Pampers wipes and an educational pamphlet. This program will reach 55,000 new moms from coast to coast, providing helpful tips on everything from how to secure a car seat to birth plans!

  • I agree that the cleaning can wait. Especially for the first few weeks, you need to recover from the birth and adjust to a new life with a baby. I spent my downtime relaxing, sleeping or doing something just for me. It was the only way to keep my sanity 🙂

  • I loved 6 — If you are questioning what size of Pampers to buy; size ‘up’. I found a bigger diaper offered even better protection.

  • I agree that it`s important to get as much rest as possible. I`ve been trying to live this in the last couple of months, and have found it has brought me a lot of peace in preparing for baby no.2

  • I like the hair changes. I always want to cut it all off when i’m pregnant then I get annoyed when I can’t ponytail it during birth. the laundry can wait or better yet hubby can figure t out, is a definite must if you’re machines are on another level. I came home from hospital after #1 and did 6 loads of laundry. going up and down from second level to basement. my girl parts hurt so bad and then the public health nurse said are you nuts. sit down and relax. so I did until I was completely healed.

  • I love them all but #1 and #10 is my favourite, with baby #3 on the way and being high-risk I have to keep telling myself it is okay to take a day to myself and not lift a finger – hard at times but so needed!

  • Number 3. My mom is going insane buying clothes for my first, stuff that he will wear next summer even and I keep telling her we have no idea how big he will be! lol

  • I like her tip no. 3 re try not to buy too many clothes for the baby until you meet him or her. It is so true! I bought way too many 3 to 6 months clothes for my baby boy (I already anticipate one size bigger rule). However, by the time he’s two months old, the 6 months old clothes seem to be a bit tight already.

  • My best friend is currently pregnant with her first baby – this prize pack would be awesome to win for her! My fave piece of advice for her from this list would be to RELAX! She is SO busy and only has about a month to go – she should be getting all the rest she can now! Thanks for the great tips and the chance to win!

  • I love her tip about not spelling your baby’s name weirdly. Your name is something that you have deal with everyday for your entire life so parents should really think about the consequences of a name.

  • I think its important to remember whether its ur first child or 2nd or 3rd.. its change. It takes time to adjust, don’t be afraid to say you’re feeling overwhelmed or exhausted and ASK FOR HELP!!!

  • My fave is #8. I used to get annoyed that my husband didn’t do things the right way (MY way) but eventually I realized that he would muddle through, the baby would be fine and it wasn’t a big deal. Things got easier on me once I let him help more & he felt like he was contributing. Win/win!!

  • Absolutely love the one about the weird spellings! Even some more traditional variation sometimes drives people crazy (like Shawn/Sean)

  • I like the advice about not bathing your babe too much. It does dry out and irritate the skin. Also I would suggest trusting your instinct on things and being not afraid to ask for help when you need it.

  • I appreciate the advice about sizing up for diapers… as a first time mom-to-be, these are things I don’t know about!

  • Awesome tips for this soon to be first time mom! I found the “get the rest now” and “don’t over bath” tips the best! I am definitely trying to rest up now and not do too much and that’s great to know about over bathing. Thank you!

  • I like tip number 4. I never thought that different name spellings may cause problems down the road but it’s so true!

  • keep a Pampers ‘Splasher’ and towel in your vehicle in the summer… impromptu swims and spray parks pop up! AMEN, I am done packing this stuff from bag and moving to another bag, etc. Next summer…I will know better!

  • I agree with the clothes bigtime. There were so many things that my son outgrew before he ever got a chance to wear them… especially since he was born during a heatwave and spent many of those early days in just a diaper. I haven’t bought a single thing for #2 yet…

  • Be sure not to ‘over-bath’ your newborn. I bathed my son everyday, and his skin became very irritated. A few times a week is perfect. amazing advice

  • Finding a babysitter you like is vital! A happy sane mommy (who can take half an hour to walk around the block or have a latte in peace) is a good mommy 🙂

  • I loved my hair during pregnancy. The second time around I told everyone to admire it-all the time. My poor co-worker had to respond appropriately to my own hair love affair. I HATE my hair post pregnancy and it takes a good year to get it back on track.

  • #2 made me chuckle. I have seen too many drastic hair changes by friends in pregnancy Glad it never made me wanna change mine….. Baby #3 on the way and I hope I am in the clear!

  • I laughed at #2. It is so true. I always tell myself and close friends, “Don’t make any decisions that will affect more than a day if you don’t have to!” Like when you are just way to hot and decide chopping your hair off is a good way to cool down…that’s going to leave some regret! #8 is very important too!

  • Number 9 is my FAVORITE one because I always worried my house was a mess and things needed to be done, but its true, all that can wait, because time flies and you need to bond and snuggle as much as possible! They grow too fast

  • I like “Don’t give your baby name weird spelling. It may seem cool… but they will spend their whole lives correcting people!”

  • I relate to #3. When I had my first I had all these cute newborn sleepers that were too small right from the time my daughter was born. For my next two I bought size 6-12 months and they fit perfect.

  • I like tip number 5 – Be sure not to ‘over-bath’ your newborn. I thought it was everyday but I read that it should be every other day or a couple times a week because baby’s skin are sensitive. Someone also told me to change the baby’s clothes each time I change his diaper.

  • I like this one:
3 — Try not to buy too many clothes for the baby until you meet him or her. I bought my son a bunch of stuff for newborns and he came out 10 pounds. He was already too big for half of it!

It is so true! They grow SOOO FAST!!! and you can almost keep the baby wearing the same easy to come on and off clothes for the first many months!

  • #7 Keep a diaper change kit and a spare set of clothes in your vehicle at ALL times. And keep a Pampers ‘Splasher’ and towel in your vehicle in the summer… impromptu swims and spray parks pop up

  • i thpught #3 was important – babies and their gear is so expensive, don’t buy a ton of nb clothing because they likely won’t wear it more than once, and people tend to love gifting clothing too, so you’ll likely have a ton without trying

  • …#6 — If you are questioning what size of Pampers to buy; size ‘up’. I found a bigger diaper offered even better protection.
    Perfect.

  • I left a comment .. however I don’t see it. .. I love all of these tips they are completely spot on! I wish I had known all of this with my 1st! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We’ve all been there and don’t be afraid of the feelings you feel, talk about them to the ppl closest to you, the ppl you feel you can trust the most.

  • Mine is find a babysitter you like,. IT si good to practice (if your going back to work) and it can give you a break, even if just to get yoru hair cut or get groceries. Well worth it!

  • 5 was my favourite because it was something I really did not know at the beginning with my first baby and wish I had known so that I didn’t irritate her skin — “Be sure not to ‘over-bath’ your newborn. I bathed my son everyday, and his skin became very irritated. A few times a week is perfect.”

I also loved 7 (spare diaper kit) and 10 (house cleaning can wait) – both great tips as well!

  • I entered your giveaway.
It would be great to win the Prenatal Prize Pack.
In response to your question of Were any of Lisa’s Top 10 Tips a favorite? Or do you have one of your own to offer?
    I liked number 4 —
Don’t give your baby name weird spelling. It may seem cool… but they will spend their whole lives correcting people.
Thank you for having this giveaway!!!!!!!!!!

  • #8, always include your husband with the care of the baby, you will need a night off at one time or another and you don’t want to worry about the baby when you are trying to relax

  • I like the don’t give your baby a weird spelling. It really is true… sometimes people spell my name Sidney, it is too annoying!

  • My favorite tip was #10 The cleaning and laundry can WAIT. Snuggle while you can. Its so true they grow so fast you don’t want to miss a minute with them, and dishes and laundry can indeed wait, it will wait for you and won’t go away ever hehe.

  • MY fave is 10 – The cleaning and laundry can WAIT. Snuggle while you can. It goes go by so fast and you need to enjoy it while you can

  • my favorite is number 10. Too many times i stressed myself out over chores that had to be done, distracting me from enjoying my new babe, theyre only little for so long.

  • Well I really agree with a few of them….get as much rest as you can before (and then after, sleep when the baby sleeps), the cleaning & laundry can wait, don’t use weird spelling (with my 1st daughter, I actually planned on spelling it differently, but then forgot when I filled out the birth certificate lol), and don’t buy too much before (even if you know the sex…I also had a baby almost 10lbs, and even the newborn diapers wouldn’t fit him…..and then my last baby, we thought would be big, but she was born at 37wks, and hubby had to go out and buy preemie clothes….I think even if she had been full term, she wouldn’t have been too big 🙂 )
