Read More You Must!

DK Books Star WarsThis review is brought to you by blog contributor Tara…

My nine year old is a fantastic reader and has been consistently ahead of his reading level each grade thus far. The only problem is that he hates reading. Both of my brothers were the same, and claimed that unless it was something they were interested in, reading was just plain-old boring.

So when my darling son asked for the sports section of the newspaper one day in order to read up on the NFL, I gladly handed it over. Later that week he rattled off statistics to me about all the different teams and players like it was just common knowledge and no big deal. When I asked him how he knew all of that stuff, he matter-of-factly replied “I read it in the paper”. Touché. At least he was reading.

For fear that he might start on the business and economics sections next, I figured it was time for some age appropriate books to broaden his vocabulary past ‘tight-end’, ‘defensive back’ and ‘rushing yards’. When the package from DK Canada arrived and I pulled out the Star Wars Readers, his expression was one of delight and excitement. “Sweet!” he exclaimed and quickly dove right into the books.

I love the fact that the readers are clearly marked with the appropriate reading level, ranging from one to four. I also really like that they are not thick novels. For my boy who hates reading, being able to get through an entire book in one sitting is a major accomplishment. The books also offer a fantastic balance between text and illustrations.

In addition to the readers, he also took a liking to DK’s StarWars Battles for the Galaxy. This fact-filled book highlights everything StarWars from characters, to weapons, to rebel bases and clones. Did you know there are 5 different kinds of light sabers and come in blades of blue, green, or red? I know, me neither!

I’m so used to the sports updates from my dear son, that when he announced in the car one day how cool Jango Fett was, I asked what team he played for. “No mom it’s a StarWars character”. Oops, I guess I should do a little reading myself.

P.S. On October 5th, Star Wars Reads Day returns! Read more about the events held across the US and Canada at the link!
