Hamilton Beach Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Maker

Hamilton Beach Ice CreamOh the sweet sweet taste of summer!

My husband is the ice cream fanatic in our household for sure, so it’s always his idea to walk to the local ice cream shack on summer nights.

So, when given the opportunity to try out a Hamilton Beach Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Maker, I knew it was something I couldn’t pass up!

The product itself doesn’t really seem like there’s much to it (who knew ice cream making was so easy!)  It’s a plastic outer container, with an insulated, removable, inside bucket and a wand for stirring.  Combining those elements with yummy ingredients results in ice cream magic.  Who knew?

At a retail price of $49.99, the Hamilton Beach Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt maker is relatively the same price as many household appliances.  I don’t think the price is astounding when you consider that a trip to an ice cream franchise shop for a family of 5 is on average $22 (according to my husband, the ice cream purchaser!)

The first step when preparing anything in this appliance is to freeze the ice cream bowl – we put ours in the freezer for 24 hours (it needs to go in the freezer between 8-24 hours depending on the temperature) – and then prepare the mixture which also needs to be chilled.  So, it’s not a middle-of-the-afternoon-idea type of appliance, ice cream making needs to be planned!

We used a recipe that came with the product and made Easy Vanilla Ice Cream the other night, except we opted to add Orange-Vanilla Syrup (found in the ice cream toppings aisle at the grocery store, beside the fudge and caramel!)  The kids love being able to help out, even if it’s just pouring the mixture in and watching it mix and informing us when “it looks ready, mom!”  Churn time is 20-40 minutes depending on desired consistency.

Other items that can be made with this product include of course any ice cream flavor that you can create (chocolate and vanilla are easy!), strawberry sorbet and even cappuccino gelato (these are all recipes found inside the instruction booklet).

I think this will be a fun item for summer fun (and perhaps some pumpkin gelato this fall?) and it’s small enough that it won’t take up much space in my storage room when not in use.  It does take some planning, but so does baking and creating other frozen treats.  If you have room in your freezer to keep the freezer bowl in there that would make the process a little more impromptu.
