The kids are out of school this week and that means it’s officially summer (OK, OK, June 20th was officially summer but we parents mark it with that last school bell!) I’m determined to spend as much time as possible outside, after complaining about our bitter winter and lousy spring this year! I’m armed with sunscreen for the kids and myself. While I can always grab whatever the kids are using, I have to say that it’s nice to have sunscreen for grown-ups, something just for me and my skin.
I was sent some lovely Vichy Sun Care products just for me and my skin, and while visiting the Vichy site I learned some interesting myths about the sun and our skin – how many have you believed only to find out they’re actually false?
All sunscreens are created equal. FALSE
Sunscreens with equal SPF don’t have equal protection. The SPF mainly indicates the UVB protection level. Not all sun protection products are broad spectrum (UVA&UVB) and photostable (sun filters don’t deteriorate within the first 30min of sun and heat exposure). That’s why the choice and combination of filters are extremely important.
I don’t need to apply sunscreen on a cloudy day. FALSE
Even if UVB rays are filtered, clouds let through almost 80% of UVA rays. These rays are responsible for skin’s premature aging and sun induced allergies, among other things.
A sunburn leaves no damage on the skin. FALSE
Even though the skin heals quickly, damage caused by UVA and UVB rays remains and accumulates after each sun exposure. Problems appear gradually as the skin’s sun capital deteriorates.
The higher the SPF, the less I have to reapply my sunscreen. FALSE
Sun protection diminishes after swimming, towel drying or sweating. It is recommended you wear water and sweat resistant photostable protection and reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours, regardless of your activity or the SPF.
When I have a tan, I don’t need to apply sunscreen because my skin is already protected. FALSE
Sun protection needs to be applied even if tanned. A tan is only an equivalent of a sunscreen with SPF of 2 to 4, not enough to keep you safe under the sun*.

Wear your sunscreen every day even when it is not sunny. Had my first visit to a dermatoligest at 52. I have no sun damage. Very happy about this. Sun screen can save your life.

I have started using sunscreen regularly this summer. I am allergic to some of the drug store brands, and it was suggested that I try Vichy!
I would love to try this! My daily face moisturizer has SPF, but I am not always great at putting sunscreen on my body because I find it feels sticky, especially on top of regular body moisturizer. It would be great to find a product that does both!
