I pride myself as a matchmaker, having two marriages to brag the success of after pairing up mutual friends whom I thought would make a good match. A Jewish friend once told me that in her culture, a matchmaker is called a Shadchan and that after three successful shidduchs (i.e. match three people with their future spouse) you go to the highest level of heaven. I thought this was amusing, and interesting at the time. I’m not Jewish but if I were, I’d be feeling pretty good about the afterlife right about now.
Still, there’s something very rewarding when you can bring two people together who eventually fall in love. Everyone wants to be happy, and when you can have a role helping your friends achieve that it’s very self-satisfying. Of course, not all matches work out or I don’t always have a single guy in the back of my mind for my fabulous single girlfriend. The end goal is happiness for my friends so I’m always curious to hear about their dating escapades and journeys.
Online matchmaking is hot-hot-hot right now and for good reason. We’re busy people and we live our lives, many of us, online so it only makes sense that we’d meet potential mates there too. I often joke that I wouldn’t know where to start if I were part of the singles scene and dating now. You see, I’m one of those classic stories who met her husband in her hometown bar.
In 1996 the bar-scene was my scene. 17 years later at 36, not so much. That’s why many people have a harder time meeting people because there isn’t a set meeting-place where the music isn’t loud enough to give you a migraine and the clientele isn’t young enough to possibly be the child of someone you went to high school with.
I have success stories to share about online dating too, but they’re not my own. They’re the work of online dating sites bringing people together! My cousin and a good friend are both successful women I know who found love, and ultimately happy marriages, with the help of a little online matchmaking!
I truly believe that this is the future of matchmaking, shidduchs, or whatever you want to call it. Successfully pairing up two of your friends who marry feels amazing, but knowing your friends are happy, in love, and in the same amazing life journey with their match like you are – that’s the best scenario regardless of how they got there.
It doesn’t matter where you live either – whether you’re looking at dating in Toronto or Saskatoon – online dating doesn’t just limit you to the hometown guys in your backyard. Though, from personal experience, don’t discount the possibility of meeting someone who grew up in the same town. Those hometown boys are pretty awesome. 😉
If you’re going to venture out there and meet Mr or Miss Happily Ever After, you need the tools to do so! If you’ve been married for 11 years like me, sending a little love note in an e mail, or creating a photo slideshow of memories are things that keep that spark! In this spirit of this, Feisty Frugal & Fabulous has teamed up with eHarmony to bring you a BlackBerry Playbook to do all those things and more!
One of my Canadian readers is going to win a BlackBerry Playbook 7-inch 32GB Tablet (ARV $224.99 CDN!) as well as a 3-month trial membership to eHarmony (you can transfer the trial membership to a friend if you know someone more deserving.) To enter to win, just use the Rafflecopter form below!

Eharmony is one of the more respected dating sites. I would consider signing up for it.
Met my husband online, 8yrs ago. Could use the playbook but would pass along the membership to a friend who has a habit of dating all the wrong kinds on PoF. I’ve been telling her to try out eHarmony.
I met my Husband at work. We now have been married 16 years. Quite a few people do meet online.
If I was single I might use eHarmony but I would tell others about it.

I have used dating sites and will continue to!
At university
I also picked him up at a bar lol. He wouldn’t tell me his name, being playful, so I named him Joe and forced him to go eat afterwards with a group of us. I don’t think it took much arm twisting, we’ve been together ever since.
I met him through school, and we re-connected many years later. If I were single, I’d definitely use a service like eHarmony — it’s a lot better than meeting someone in a bar/club, and just the same as meeting someone in a coffee shop or something.
I met my husband at work. It was his full time job, and I was there on a co op placement.

Give it a try! Without looking for an online match…. I found one anyways and will soon be celebrating our six year anniversary…and I met up with him on Yahoo of all places… Love is where you find it.

I would feel uncomfortable and unnatural being matched by anyone, but I guess it also depends on how desperate you are to find someone… maybe then all the awkwardness goes away.

Met mine through my brother-in-law when I was 16…been together ever since. Almost 8 years
Mine is a bit of an odd story…My husband of 15 yrs had taken his own life, leaving me to raise our 2 boys, then 12 & 14 alone. I can not begin to tell you of the trail of devastation he left… but, a few months afterward, I decided to take the boys and go on vacation to Jamaica just to get away from all the heartache. I actually met a wonderful man there and a year later we were married and he raised my 2 boys as his own. In 2000, we had a baby as well and we are still madly in love. Sad start but a really happy ending. 😉

I met my significant other at a concert in Wasaga Beach Labor Day weekend in 2009. He was working for Malibu Rum and myself I was a tad bit intoxicated at the time as I was a concert goer he gave me and my two girlfriends a couple pairs of Malibu sandles (I had broke my one girlfriends by stepping on them as she was walking lol) he also gave us some baseball caps then proceeded to pour a whole basket of chap stick into my purse. We then exchanged numbers I thought he was cute and I was single at the time. He messaged me later that night but the tequila had taken over and I was face down in my tent. I didn’t see him the rest of the weekend and went home and life went on. Six months after the fact I was going through my phone deleting numbers and came across “Malibu Steve” as that is what he put himself in my phone as lol I thought what the heck still single I shot him a text saying hi. He replied back “who is this?”. I laughed and replied “oh you deleted me did you?” he said “no got a new phone, who is this?”. I was ready to be the Gemini I am and play a little game so I responded “you have one hint and one chance to guess who I am, here is your hint “Two different coloured eyes” Totally not expecting him to let alone remember me as we met briefly for a whole 10 minutes and it had been 6 months but to remember I had two different coloured eyes I was so not giving him a chance in you know what. Well didn’t he prove me wrong by replying “Aimee” and even spelt my name right. We chatted for a bit and he offered me and my sister Leafs Tickets (yuck but seeing him was worth the crappy game) and we have been together ever since. Our anniversary is on March 23rd and it will be three years for us!
I used dating sites after leaving the father of my girls as a single mom it was hard to meet new people and I had some great relationships and lasting friendships come from dating sites so I would encourage anyone to try them out!

I met my partner at work. I knew him for 3 months before I realized he was deaf! He doesn’t sign, only lip reads, and is very good at it. In fact, he can do anything. Turns out, I’M the one with the disability, as I let smaller issues than a hearing disability get me down. Great partner, I learn so much from him.

I met my wonderful man through “work”. I worked at the same company as him, but in a different city. We emailed back and forth on a regular basis & always made each other laugh. He ended up having to come to the city that I lived in & asked if I wanted to hang out. Lucky for him it was a week or 2 before Christmas and I hadn’t even started my shopping – so he spent 9 hours in the mall with me as I ventured from shop to shop…. and ended up with NOTHING after those 9 hours & he still wanted to hang out with me the next day. That’s when I knew he was the one for me 😉
