Win a BlackBerry Playbook with eHarmony! (Giveaway)

I pride myself as a matchmaker, having two marriages to brag the success of after pairing up mutual friends whom I thought would make a good match.  A Jewish friend once told me that in her culture, a matchmaker is called a Shadchan and that after three successful shidduchs (i.e. match three people with their future spouse) you go to the highest level of heaven. I thought this was amusing, and interesting at the time. I’m not Jewish but if I were, I’d be feeling pretty good about the afterlife right about now.

Still, there’s something very rewarding when you can bring two people together who eventually fall in love.  Everyone wants to be happy, and when you can have a role helping your friends achieve that it’s very self-satisfying.  Of course, not all matches work out or I don’t always have a single guy in the back of my mind for my fabulous single girlfriend.  The end goal is happiness for my friends so I’m always curious to hear about their dating escapades and journeys.

Online matchmaking is hot-hot-hot right now and for good reason.  We’re busy people and we live our lives, many of us, online so it only makes sense that we’d meet potential mates there too.  I often joke that I wouldn’t know where to start if I were part of the singles scene and dating now. You see, I’m one of those classic stories who met her husband in her hometown bar.

In 1996 the bar-scene was my scene.  17 years later at 36, not so much.  That’s why many people have a harder time meeting people because there isn’t a set meeting-place where the music isn’t loud enough to give you a migraine and the clientele isn’t young enough to possibly be the child of someone you went to high school with.

I have success stories to share about online dating too, but they’re not my own.  They’re the work of online dating sites bringing people together!  My cousin and a good friend are both successful women I know who found love, and ultimately happy marriages, with the help of a little online matchmaking!

I truly believe that this is the future of matchmaking, shidduchs, or whatever you want to call it.  Successfully pairing up two of your friends who marry feels amazing, but knowing your friends are happy, in love, and in the same amazing life journey with their match like you are – that’s the best scenario regardless of how they got there.

It doesn’t matter where you live either – whether you’re looking at dating in Toronto or Saskatoon – online dating doesn’t just limit you to the hometown guys in your backyard.  Though, from personal experience, don’t discount the possibility of meeting someone who grew up in the same town.  Those hometown boys are pretty awesome. 😉
