I had a blast this morning at Global Saskatoon Morning News with Kevin Stanfield. We discussed kid’s birthday parties and ways to keep things simple (and frugal!) Click above to watch the video segment!
Before my interview, I tweeted that Kevin might be disappointed I wasn’t bringing him a pony. I think his tantrum below displays his reaction to the news. Like my “mom” look of disapproval?
Thanks, as always, to the Global Saskatoon Morning News team for making my visits so much fun!
You seemed like a pro! Except for the hand-talking . That just makes you more relatable though.
I’m so bad for that – and realized even more so after watching the clip! I’m sitting on my hands next time. 😛
Lots of great tips! Comes in handy since we have 2 birthdays coming in the next month!
My daughters bday is this weekend 🙂
love the dress (i think? lol)
I am always thinking of how to be frugal for bday parties! Especially because my daughter’s bday is December 31st!! LOL
Great job! Even with the hand talking 😉 So true – there is SO much out there for ideas. I like to keep it old fashioned and simple. Agreed also about stopping trying to compare to other moms.
Love this!
Totally agree with comparing the party to others. At the end of the day it’s a celebration for the little one and your close family 🙂
Great ideas and when you are on a budget this is great for those that try to keep up with “the jones ” per say.I love the idea of cookie cutters and playdoh !
It is so true that there is so much to compare to now.
I love your idea to have a at home spa party.. My daughter would love that
Great ideas! Love something different, love thinking outside of the box!

You do such a great job on these interviews
You handle yourself wonderfully on camera…I am very impressed, Tenille. I love the dress and your hair looks lovely…well done 🙂
Great spot! You seem like a seasoned pro!
Great interview. It’s amazing how much parents spend on birthday parties these days, like parents are just trying to out-do each other! I love these frugal saving tips!
Awesome, I think you did a great job! Great tips too! 🙂
Great tips, wrote most of them down. We have my sons 4th birthday party before a week before Easter and my daughters 1st birthday party a week after Easter
I agree I have had friends that spent as much as a 1000 on one party and was stressed out. I personally try to keep it simple and it make me popular but they have a great time! I love your ideas! Keeping them at home does save a lot of money to put elsewhere in the party!
Love the play dough idea
Great tips, you come off as so personable and friendly as well… and non sequitar, but I love your shirt!
great tips!!! bday parties stress me out!
i bite my tongue when I hear what my sister in law does for parties. she has had big parties for her kids at the age of 2! now the two oldest 5 1/2 and 4 she has 2 yes 2 birthday parties. not just little ones huge ones. i want to say how many presents does one child need that you have two parties. and its not one for friends and one for family its one for one group of friends and another day one for another group of friends. she spends a fortune on the parties and loot bags, I want to see you are spending more on party and loot bags for other kids then your own child.
Love the ideas for budget friendly parties!
love this, i will be using this for my daughter’s next bday!!
Great video!
great tips thank you!
I think a lot of people go overboard for birthday parties, especially first birthdays!
Great job! Some awesome ideas there.

Home parties are even getting out of hand. A Candy Buffet? the Cake, food, decorations, loot bags eat up most of the small budget we have for bday parties.
Great tips

Thanks for the ideas!
Great job! Haven’t planned a birthday party yet, it will be a whole new experience
Birthday parties can be expensive and stressful when you have three kids. I’ve come to realize though that my kids don’t need big extravagant parties to be happy as they get older. They are happy with a simple get together with a few friends.
It’s so easy to go overboard with kids parties. We just celebrated my son’s first birthday, and I had to restrain myself so much from ideas I’ve seen all over Pinterest and other blogs! Thanks for the tips!
birthday parties always seem expensive, but as long as they are together, safe and having fun, that is all that matters, great tips 🙂 ty
i’ve come to learn that if you can afford it, have the kids party somewhere other than your home. kids love to make messes and you do not have to worry about the mess or entertainment
So many good tips. Here at our house we set a budget and if something goes over we just don’t do it. We have never had a complaint;)
Great ideas!!
Thanks for the tips! Spending for kids’ parties can get out of control quickly and easily! 🙂
thanks for the tips and advice; sure can use some of them.
Great tips! I am always looking do new tips to make parties memorable
Great tips!!
Great interview and lots of fun tips!
i brought the party home this past year and it was awesome. Did both my boys at the same time – way too many kids, but I’m a great deal scavenger and so the loot bags were affordable and included things they got made at the party, too. in the end I did spend more than I should have, though. Pinterest – I blame that. 🙂 although I only did 3 of the 10 activities I wanted to do. I decided it should only be two hours and managed to make pick 3 things that fit in with that + cake. I think more fun than the playplace for sure.
ps. how neat to actually get to hear you, too. Loved the interview!
Great ideas for all mothers in today’s day and age. You’re right! It’s the quality time that you spend with your children, not what you can give them and try to impress the other kids by spending big bucks!
Great tips thanks!
Thanks for sharing these great tips!
excellent ideas, birthday parties are getting pretty crazy
Great tips!
great interviews – lots of great ideas!
Keep it small – kids are happy with friends to play with so you don’t need to go overboard!

Haha. Love the pony bit! I am surprised at the amount some will spend on birthdays for kids. Often it seems as though it ends up being more about the parent.

Great party ideas… thanks for sharing!
I can’t agree with you more – the quality time you spend with your child is far more important than the extra touches on the party at the end of the day. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
I am always looking for birthday ideas!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Love it! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the great ideas. I wish we could bring our parties home, but living in an urban setting with a small apartment, it’s just not possible.
Great Ideas!
Thank you for the wonderful ideas!
I would love to win this stroller to help a friend of mine. She just adopted an eleven day old baby girl named Katlynn. Katlynn was born to druggies. She was born with meth in her system. My friend Shandell doesn’t have a stroller. She went and bought a car seat and all the basics so she can bring baby home. This would be a huge help for her, and a wonderful surprise. I have posted on facebook about the situation and a lot of my other friends have given a helping hand with donating clothes and things to her.
Very cool article! I love all of the ideas!
Thanks! The big 3 is the next birthday in our house!
My kids have their birthdays coming up in two months and I am currently contemplating ideas for their joint party. Thanks for the tips.

Cute video clip! You are great on camera.
I am a great believer in smaller birthday celebrations. At home or in the park…going to a Spray Park for smaller kiddies, works just fine…and the fresh air is a total bonus.

I am TERRIFIED to host a kiddy birthday party…lol! So much so, that I have 3 kids 3&under and have yet to plan one! These tips make it seem like a breeze! 😉
i wanna do the cookie idea 🙂 love new party ideas…
Love all the tips, look forward to using some of them!
Smart tips 🙂 love hosting parties at home.
I am SO in agreement! I have 6 kids and the older ones had parties at home, the treasure hunt, we did cake decorating party one year, and just general parties with games and prizes and a cake. Simple.
Then we moved to a larger city where more is available to DO for kids and all of a sudden it was Chucky Cheese, bowling, lazer tag, Build a Bear, movie parties, etc…and yes, the kids come to expect “goodie” bags that hold about as much as what we would GIFT another child for a bday party. Honestly, it comes out to more than $25 or $30 a head, easily for some.
Kids have come to expect lavish parties and I think TV is a part of it all. Now we have teens and they look at the Sweet 16 parties out there. It is incredibly ridiculous! We do parties for our kids every other year, we actually asked our son a couple years ago if he’d rather have a new quality bike, or have a lesser gift and a bigger party. He opted for the bike and no party. Our teen daughter is more about the memories and not the gift so might not be so easy to find ideas for a teen party but not too grown up. Love some ideas!
Awesome tips….wish I had read this before throwing my sons birthday
Love this! Will keep the ideas in mind for our next party!
So cute! Awesome ideas… Thankfully my kids have all been about having a small party with a few friends here at home… and just hanging out…I haven’t ever had to do the huge over the top parties because they went to a few with their friends and never seemed all that impressed. We’ve also made it a point to let them have parties that aren’t always birthday…the end of the school year party lets everyone know to bring towels and sunscreen and a suit… it’s all about water guns and balloons, and bobbing for apples, home made popsicles and icecreams 🙂 Kids just want to be togeher and have fun…if you make the day special, it doesn’t need to be elaborate!
Shoulda brought a pony… LOL. Fun segment!
What an amazing opportunity!
Will be keeping this in mind for when my little one is old enough for a birthday party :)!
love it
Fun tips 🙂 thanks!
I agree. What’s most important is the time you spend with your kids and that they get to share their special day with their friends.
Great Idea and what’s important and that our children have a fun day on their special day!

These tips are great, especially for parties that are during colder weather.
Fun tips. I’ll definitely refer back when planning parties in the future for my little guy. You’ve got the “mom look of disapproval” down pat. 🙂

I am a huge fan of keeping kids birthday parties simple. It seems like these parties get way out of control these days and “keeping up” is harder every year.
Great tips and ideas!
awesome tips!!
Great tips!! So often these days little kids parties are getting so over the top! I love that you’re addressing budget friendly ideas!!
Great tips for birthday party planning!
Both my boys are born within a month of each other. Along with that there is my birthday, brother, grandmother, best friend, and aunt. It’s a very very busy expensive month for us. So needless to say birthdays at our household are usually a bbq and fireworks afterwards for close friends and family only. We like it simple and cheap 🙂
Definitely doing the play doh party!
Thanks for the tips! I like to keep it simple

Great tips. Bdays seem to be so much more extravagant than when I was a kid.
Way to rock the interview! 🙂 Great tips, too! It’s so surprising how costly (and over the top!) a simple birthday party can get these days..
Yes, so many parents are celebrating over-the-top parties. Also, I cant imagine but think that those kids will be expecting a bigger one the next time. Liked your interview!

Loved the play doh party idea.

I love the home birthday partys! You can be way more creative and still keep your budget, make your own cakes or personalized cup cakes for the kids, play all the older games like pit the tail on the donkey or get the egg in the cup game, its fun for the kids and Mom too!
These were amazing ideas Tenille I love that you shared them and they have inspired me to have fun creative and FRUGAL birthday parties for my two girls!
You’re famous 😉
Thanks for the tips. The play doh is pretty cool and def. a keeper!
How cool that you get to be on TV and all 🙂 Loved the simplicity of having the parties at home; take advantage of social media and find ideas to do in home.
