My Fabulous Life

Cutting Costs in 2013

Global Jan 4

The photo above is from my January 4th interview with Lisa Dutton at Global Saskatoon Morning News. Our topic was cutting costs in 2013 and simple ways that everyone can do it!

A short tip sheet (which was shared in the video but unfortunately the video is gone, *cry*):
1. Use coupons! I listed three sites to visit to get the most useful ones here in Canada.
2. Collect points and redeem big with store rewards/points cards (I love Sobey’s and Shoppers Optimum!)
3. Credit card rewards cards – as mentioned earlier this month, I managed to pay off my credit card debt and am now looking for the best rewards card out there. I share which rewards card I’m leaning towards in 2013.
4. Kids Eat Free! I highlighted some info from post on restaurants where kids eat free post earlier this week.

  • Wow! Congrats, that was an awesome interview! I use coupons all the time and go to the three sites that you mentioned all the time. I don’t understand why people think coupons are bad, the companies make coupons so that consumers will purchase their products and I would rather have my savings in my pocket than give it to some store. I really appreciate the info on PC rewards program credit cards. What you said makes so much sense. I definitely will be checking this out. I didn’t know about this credit card. Again, congratulations, that was a fantastic, informative interview!

  • Great job! I would be so nervous doing anything like that! I really need to cut back this year as last year we had many big expenses come up. Your advise is really helpful.

  • Great interview and tips. I was aware of save.ca but not the other 2 websites, so bookmarking them now. Thank you!!

  • The interview was very good! Great tips too! You looked great and you spoke very well…impressed 🙂

  • Yes coupons and Shopper’s optimum points help me save so much money! I couldn’t go back to not using them!

  • Great interview!! And I couldn’t agree more about coupons. Have just starting to collect/use them again.

  • Way to go Tenille! You were so relaxed in this interview, don’t think I would be. Thanks for the tips, I am going to start using more coupons. You gave us all some great ideas there. Thanks for that.

  • Awesome job!!! I think you have some great tips and I’m going to use a few of them for my family this year!! All the best for 2013!

  • What a great informative interview thanks for all the great tips will try to apply them for this year!

  • thanks for the helpful info; I too use coupons but have a hard time finding many that I would want to use; will check out
    your info.

  • I would love to remember to go through my coupons before going to the stores. When I remember I save anywhere from $3.00 to $10 with coupons.. Love coupons.

  • I never really think about printing or requesting coupons online. There’s a lot to choose from. It’ll take some organization but I think I can do it.

  • Wish my brain functioned like yours! But I am trying to cut costs. We are moving closing date is march 1st, but where we r moving houses so much more expensive so I’ve been couponing like crazy, not using visa. And I ask myself “do you need it” I’ve also started a booklet writing down what I spend ie groceries, dog food etc. always checking for sales to use my coupons. I won &100 worth of gift cards from Sobeys, so up yesterday I went with 50 dollars worth and my coupons. Orig price was 67.25 with cards and coupons I paid 25 cents! Love it.

  • Great post! We are trying to cut costs, too (most people are I think!). I said to my husband the other day that “It feels like we are syphoning money”… Things need fixing, life events, just money money money. This year we plan to cut costs by eating out less and reducing cell phone bills. A start, but it’s something 🙂

  • Great interview. I am into saving where I can to cut costs since we are on a very limited budget. Do a lot of couponing 🙂

  • Awesome post and great incentives. I plan on not using my cr. cards and paying a larger amt. every month. That oughta do it. 🙂

  • Great info! I also read your credit card “pay-off” – congrats! I do use coupons occasionally, great intentions – low results 🙂 One credit card I started using was the Costco amex. It does offer but Costco points, redeemed at Costco – and also Amex points – redeemed in cash. So it’s kind of like double points for my $$. Just have to keep it paid off every month or it can SO get out of hand.

  • Great interview and fantastic tips! I have been making an effort to save money and cut costs for our family of 6 for the past three years. It’s amazing how much th esavings add up!

  • Great job! I look forward to your preferred credit card, I am thinking about a switch too. I am hoping to cut back on gas spending!

  • I would probably be very nervous to do what you did the news people here in Toronto are very uhm I rather not go there. But you did a great job.

  • Awesome tips. I’m big on reward and points cards. My hubby likes the cash back credit cards and the PC credit card for free groceries. I’m going to look at the coupon sites you suggested. Thanks for the helpful saving ideas.

  • I am a big coupon user and will hold on to many of them to us for when that item comes on sale. Most stores in my area will not accept coupons that I have printed out though which irritates me.

  • I have started making some of my own cleaning and personal care products. You can make a lot of laundry detergent for pennies per use, and you know exactly what is in it. And homemade fabric softener sheets, deodorant, liquid hand soaps, and many other products. Pinterest is a great place to find some starting places for you to begin.

  • I used to use coupons all the time but then got out of it some. But I am defiantly going back to the coupon ways. We saved so much money!

  • Nice job – congrats on the interview! Good tips . I’m already really big on using coupons (never thought I would ever use them, but now i don’t go to the grocery without them – ever!) . Also do all pretty much all points programs available and all credit cards give me some type of rewards. These things really do add up and it feels great when you save with coupons and/or redeem points for free stuff. Birthday freebies are also a good thing to sign up for.

  • My New Year Resolution is to get out of credit card debt this year so I really liked the tips you suggested. I am a huge coupon user these days and cannot believe how much I save on our groceries and household items, especially cleaning products. I buy most of our clothing off season and that really helps our budgets. I am determined to get financially secure this year!!

  • Great tips! I am very much one to use coupons – the savings do add up over time! I am also one to stock up when prices are great (on items I frequently use and won’t expire before that time)..

    Thanks for the tips!

  • Very cool. I always clip coupons and then completely forget them in my purse. One day I’ll remember to take advantage of them.

  • Great Job! I love the points rewards from stores – and coupons – I use them a lot on the things I normally buy. Why pay the extra, right? And if you want an extra boost for a reward for hard work shop like usual, and if you use a coupon, put that money a savings account. It’s awesome to see it grow!

  • Fantastic tips! I generally will use coupons with a sale item to get the most savings and do price matching whenever I can. Love flyer day 🙂

  • Wonderful interview! I’m all about price matching. It saves so much time too not going to each place for sales

  • All the tips were great, we always use coupons when we can and buy nothing unless it’s on sale. Also from years of experience even if that head of lettuce is 4 for a dollar don’t buy unless you plan to use up all 4, waste not want not!
