My Fabulous Life

Who Coined the Term Lazy Days of Summer??

Really – who created that well known term, and did they have children?  Although summer is certainly a less hectic time with no school schedules and several activities, there’s still plenty going on at home and lazy is not how I’d describe any of us during the day (very unfortunately!)

Doing crossword puzzles with Baba

We just got back from a 1 week road trip visiting friends and family in what my friend Cora called the Saskatchewan Bermuda Triangle.  Down from Saskatoon to Yorkton, then over to Regina, then back up to Saskatoon again (before heading home to the Battlefords).

The kids got in some quality time with their grandparents along with their aunt and uncle, walking to the dollar store in the nearby mall, having breakfast on the back deck, and even taking in a super fun indoor waterpark (Gallagher Center in Yorkton, if you’re in the area).

Friends in Regina and Saskatoon reminded me how wonderful they are and how easy it is to lose an extra hour in the catch-up sessions!

Now that we’ve been back home for the past 12 hours, we’re cleaning, grocery shopping (which is how I have the time to write this, thanks super-dad!) and preparing for more events with friends this week before my husband goes back to work.

Hanging out at the local toddler pool

Thankfully (!!!) there are a few places the kids can go to get out of our hair for a bit play with other kids including a great Summer Playground program here in our city.  Four playgrounds around the city have full time staff Monday-Friday from 11am-5pm hosting activities, games and crafts with kids and it’s a totally free drop-in program.  The best part?  Our neighborhood park is one of the locations so I can walk my 8 year old there each day if he wants to go.  Children under 6 require adult supervision so if my 4 year old wants to go, I find a cozy spot on a park bench and read for an hour while she is part of the program.  Awesome!

Next week, all 3 kids are in swimming lessons at the indoor pool in town on a 10 day course (so basically every weekday for 2 weeks).  All 3.  What this means is that while my 8 year old and 4 year old are having their swimming lessons with their classes, I’ll be in the water with 15 month old Everleigh participating in parent/tot swimming lessons.

I know it sounds insane but the alternative would be to have her behind a glass window for 40 minutes each day watching her brother and sister, while whining that she wants to swim too!  At 15 months she is a little fish like her brother and sister are in the water (which I’m told is a good thing, better to have them love the water than fear it!)

Lazy days of summer…yeah right!

  • What a pretty name your daughter has…Everleigh. I like that 🙂
It’s not too lazy over here either..but we are nowhere near a park.

  • I admire your ability to get 3 children (and yourself!) changed out of bathing suits and into dry clothes without the help of a small army. Those 10 days with my 2 kids was an extreme test of my patience!

    • Thanks Beth! The 8 year old is self-sufficient (mind you, we lost goggles on day one and trunks by day day 7) but the other two made things interesting. Glad I did it but don’t think I’d attempt it again on my own!
