Saskatchewanians are wondering if this year will be the last of something we’ve come to look forward to every winter. February break has traditionally occurred in the week that holds the Monday Family Day stat holiday (observed in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario). It gives us an additional 4 extra weekdays (plus the two weekends) to plan a number of winter activities to give everyone a break and a fresh perspective when they return.
2012 may be the last year of the February break, as there’s been discussion about eliminating the break in a way to salvage those 4 extra days to use elsewhere in the school year. In Saskatchewan, students typically go back to school at the end of August, before the Labor Day long weekend. It’s been an annoyance for many families because it takes away our ability to plan a longer “last horrah!” summer vacation since we have to be back in school mode the week before that. I’d really like to see the kids go back to school in September instead of late August, but I’m not sure I like the idea of our February break being eliminated! Another idea was to cut back the days used during Christmas break – I think I like this idea better because, wow, this last break seemed really long (maybe mom needed to get outside more….)
This year, with very little snow (the photo above was taken last winter), I’m not sure what our February break plans hold but I feel like we should be doing something since it could possibly be our last! We will either travel 5 hours (each way!) to visit my parents or just take it easy at home with a staycation. Maybe we can take a day-trip to Saskatoon for a Toys R Us stop so the kids can use their Christmas gift cards – or maybe we will plan some local activities like a library visit, coffee with friends, and maybe attempt a snow hill if there’s enough snow!
What are your plans for the upcoming winter break – whether your province holds it in February or March? Are you going on a sunny vacation or staying close to home and having a staycation?
This year I’m partnering with Kinder Canada once again as a Kinder Mom, so I’ll be bringing you news about Kinder products (have you seen some of the new toys released?) and happenings on the Kinder Canada Facebook page. In the month of February, fans can enter to win $500 towards a family staycation!!! Check out the Kinder Canada page for more details (and good luck, guys!)

Wonderful post as always! I hope Sk works out a plan to keep families playing together! #kindermom @Inrdream
|I agree with you the Christmas break is the one to shorten. The kids need a break in winter.
An exciting spring break this year (in Mar for ON) since my sister and her family will be coming out to see us from AB!!! No idea when spring break is in AB since my neice is a pre-schooler, but I’ve always had trouble getting together with my sis in SK since the spring school breaks don’t match up. Will the break be moved to coincide with Easter maybe??
sounds good #kindermom yes holidays seem so short, didn’t know about school starting so early in SK
