My Fabulous Life

Halloween Costumes for Tweens? Seriously?

I’m not sure when Halloween switched from a fun holiday where kids dress up as witches, princesses or their favorite super-hero into a day (or weekend) when tweens and teens dress up as street walkers and get away with it.

While looking for costumes for my kids online, I came across several questionable costumes for TWEENS.  Now, according to Wikipedia and generally parents everywhere, Tweens are a demographic between the ages of 9-12 years old.

Would you let your 9 or 12 year old wear this?  And if you would….WHY?

When we’re constantly fearful of freaks stealing our kids or lusting over them in pictures we post on Facebook that we thought were harmless, this kind of crap encourages it.  I think it’s horrible, and think even less of the companies that market this.  All the “creepy” costumes shown here are listed for “tweens” (9-12 years old!) on the costume super site I got them from.

Creeped out yet?  Just wait til October 31st.

  • Oops, wrong comment in the wrong spot. My comment HERE was supposed to say I TOTALLY agree and in the end, shame on the parents for allowing their children to dress this way. Here in our home, our 2 daughters (7 & 5) are not even allowed to wear 2 piece bathing suits per hubs, and I am a-okay with that! Also, there are children in my oldest daughter’s second grade class that have dyed hair, small high heel dress shoes and don’t even get me started on the outfits!

  • I totally agree that many of the costumes are way out of line. I feel the same way about costumes geared toward women as well. I was surfing a costume site just the other day (for a review) and I had a hard time finding anything that would fall past my butt cheeks. I mean, come on, I wasn’t searching for lingerie or something to wear just strictly in the bedroom. I was looking for a costume, one that would keep me warm since our Halloweens here are quite cold, as well as one that was appropriate to wear around my kids and neighbors. No way am I wearing something that makes me look like I’m heading for a street corner. I think it’s ridiculous that so many costume designers feel that all women want to wear revealing attire for the holiday. I seriously quit wearing costumes years ago because they just kept getting tinier and tinier yet the prices continue to climb. Insane!

  • Oh I totally agree. I was browsing though a costume site and saw similar (and worse!) costumes and I was right creeped out. I will freely admit I dressed up and went out tricking treating until I was 13 or 14, as I had a little sister I could cart out as an excuse. I see nothing wrong with old kids taking part in Hallowe’en. The rule has always been as long as they’re wearing a costume (and yeah uniforms from the local Catholic high school don’t count), then they get loot. But costumes like this? I would be uncomfortable if my 15 or 16 year old wanted to dress like that, a 9 or 10 year old dressing in garters is quite simply disgusting.

  • I’m a strong believer that Halloween is the one day a year that tweens to adults can just slut it up and “get away with it”. I don’t understand where costumes went from cute/scary to slutty. It’s like after a certain age its all about slutting it up.

    It breaks my heart.

  • Definitely creeped out – I completely agree! And my hubby and I noticed it last Halloween when we were out with our kids. Society is going morally downhill, to say the least.
