August Long Weekend ~ What Are You Up To?

What are fellow Canadians up to this long weekend?  Typically, US and Canadian long weekends overlap in the summer months but not this one.  Canadians get a long weekend in July/August/September, though the September one can be sketchy for weather.

So, Canadians celebrate with all their might on the August long weekend.  Most provinces call it a Civic Holiday, though here it’s Saskatchewan day (in places like Nova Scotia it’s known as Natal Day).

Since I was gone all last week and will be leaving again on Thursday, I am making the best of the 5 days I have home with the family (cry!) and planning some great activities.  Yesterday we enjoyed the air conditioned comfort of a movie theater while checking out Smurfs 3D (my 3 year old’s  first movie!) and today we headed out to a local paddling pool so the kids could run around and splash while mom, dad and baby enjoyed the shade (at 33 Celsius that paddling pool looked really tempting!)  The photo to the left was taken this afternoon while we relaxed in the shade.

Tomorrow we are planning on hitting the beach and then having a BBQ with friends – I haven’t made homemade burgers in awhile and it’s one of my summer favorites.  As always, I’m using Wonder+ Simply Free hot dog buns because it’s gotta be white bread with my hamburgers and this way, my family can enjoy white bread without the guilt.   Why?  Wonder+ Simply Free is the first Canadian National Brand of bakery products FREE OF artificial preservatives, flavors and colors; it is also free of high fructose corn syrup and made with unbleached wheat flour.

I was a Wonder Bread fan before Wonder+ Simply Free, so now I’ve made the switch (from the blue bag to the green bag, it’s that simple) and nothing has changed in taste.

We’re having regular burgers this weekend, but after I checked out this Taco Chicken on a Bun recipe on the Canadian Living site I became determined to try it out.  It looks really easy (I loooove Mexican food!)
