Before purchasing our HE washer and dryer a little over a year ago, I did some research online and asked my friends who already had HE washers how they liked them.  The one complaint that stood out everywhere I researched was that, after awhile, HE washers can start to smell.

The culprits, apparently, are the hoses and other rubber components of the washer.  One way to help keep your washer odor free, I read, is to keep the door open when not in use.  I have been very diligent about this; my husband, not so much.  After my c-section I couldn’t do the laundry for about 5 weeks and so it became my husband’s responsibility.  It was after this point that the odor started in our washer.  I couldn’t exactly be mad at the man that had done our laundry for 5 weeks without a complaint, so I just made an effort to make sure the door was left open again from that point on.

Thankfully, there are products out there designed to combat this problem.  Affresh Washer Cleaner is a simple tablet that you use in your HE washer once a month to help clean it and keep it odor free.  The package states, however, that if odor is already present it could take up to 3 tablets (3 wash cycles total) to eliminate the odor.

Affresh also makes a Dishwasher Cleaner.  My husband is a little fanatical about keeping our dishwasher clean, probably because he was the one who had to clean up the mess when the hose on our old dishwasher became clogged and we ended up replacing the appliance entirely because it kept happening.  Again, using just one tablet a month is all you need to keep it clean.
