Chicken Soup for the Soul Country Music

Recognize that song verse?  Of course, it’s from Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys – a very famous country song and one of the first songs I remember from my childhood.  The song has been recorded by Ed Bruce, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings among others but the version I first heard was on my Chipmunks record!  I think it’s probably still my favorite version too.

I wouldn’t characterize myself as a country music fan; however, there are a ton of country songs that I really like so maybe I should decide what really makes one a fan of a certain genre.

Maybe it’s more accurate to say I like all music and a song that speaks to me is likely to become a favorite.

My dad, growing up, always shook his head at my choice of (80s/90s hair band) music and said that good music, country music, contained songs that had a story to tell.  He was right.

Country music is known for song verses that share misery, joy, longing and celebration (not necessarily in that order!) and now fans of country music and Chicken Soup for the Soul books alike can learn the stories behind 101 of their favorite country songs in Chicken Soup for the Soul Country Music.  Of course I looked up this song from my childhood and learned that it was written by a husband and wife team and it was the first song they wrote together.

A word of caution, don’t read the stories in this book, or the song verses, without a box of kleenex nearby.  I had tears rolling down my cheeks after reading the story behind one of my mom’s favorite country songs, “Holes in the Floor of Heaven”.
