Having a newborn probably adds to my obsession with germs and trying to keep the house clean but like most moms, there’s never enough hours in the day and without a house-cleaner, my house just won’t look as clean as I want it to on a day-to-day basis. I’m having an ongoing war with dust and it’s making me crazy. Having a black leather couch and dark wood furniture in my living room is not helping things – who knew that the back of your couch could be a nice landing place for dust? I almost wish I had purchased a cloth fabric couch instead – the dust would still be there but it wouldn’t be as obvious. We actually bought an air purifier a few months ago in an attempt to try and eat-up some of the dust in the air (but remembering to run it daily is a whole other issue).
We have hard flooring throughout our upper level but the basement is all carpet. Thinking of how much dust accumulates upstairs, I can’t imagine how much is in the carpets downstairs even with regular vacuuming. I think once a year carpet cleaning might be a good idea (we only clean our carpets, typically, when we move in and out of a house) to help keep the house clean. Google is both a help and a horror for me because when I googled different options for it, I found out that sometimes you can make matters worse.
It’s really important, if you’re renting a carpet cleaning machine or having it professionally done with a service like ChemDry or others, that the carpet is dry within 24 hours. That’s why we’d never clean our carpets in the winter months because you need to have the windows open to properly ventilate the room and help speed up the drying process.
If your carpet remains wet for too long, mold and bacteria can grow and you’re actually in a worse place than when you started (ew.) So, if there’s a time to clean carpets it’s now, before the hot humid weather starts. Who am I kidding, it’s hot here in SK for 5 days in July….
Do you clean your carpets annually or just like we do when we move? Seems kind of counter-productive to clean them for the next person to enjoy, hey?
