Baby Be Mine Maternity

Have you considered bringing your own delivery gown to the hospital?  With my first two pregnancies, it never crossed my mind – mostly due to the fact that I had no idea you could do that!  So, I reluctantly put on the hospital-supplied delivery gowns with the horrible ties in the back, butt exposed, face pale against the blue/grey of the gown and literally pushed onward.

When I was given the opportunity to review a Gownie from Baby Be Mine Maternity, I told a friend about it on MSN that day as we both looked through the selection picking out which one would be best.  She said she wasn’t sure it was something she needed should she have another baby, but it would be nice to have.  I offered her mine down the road, since after this delivery I wouldn’t need it any more.  She said, “Ur…no offence but I’ll just get my own.”  Because, well, you know the stuff that happens when you’re wearing a delivery gown – she didn’t want to borrow mine even though it would obviously be cleaned.

I said to her, “So, then, you’re willing to wear a hospital gown that’s been worn by hundreds of women instead?”  Yeah….that sealed the deal for her – her husband said he’d buy her one when the time came.

See?  I bet you never really thought about that until now.  Yes, a lot of not so pleasant things happen when wearing a delivery gown but I’m of the position now that I’d rather wear my own, thanks, and let those other ones stay nicely folded by the bed pan.

Plus, with all the great colors available you can find one that will compliment your own coloring (great for photos!) instead of making you look even more exhausted and washed out than you feel.

I picked the Grace Gownie after taking forever to make a decision!  It came nicely folded and packaged but I decided to wash it before packing it in my hospital bag since it had fold creases.  A note – once you wash the Gownie you will end up with more wrinkles than you started with – it’s a light cotton material similar to a bed sheet – so make sure you are ready to iron or steam it afterwards.

I packed my Grace Gownie in my hospital bag and upon arrival asked the nurse if I could put it on, instead of the yucky blue ones that everyone else wears.  She said I could, if I was fine with it getting dirty (obviously!).  It made me feel better to have my own gown on during labor (you feel uncomfortable and gross as it is, so anything helps!)

As it turns out I had to have a c-section and had to change into a different, sterile, gown for the procedure.  My husband took my Gownie home that night, washed it, and brought it back to the hospital for me the next day to wear again (what a man, hey?)

I definitely felt better wearing my own gown rather than the hospital gown, and during and after delivery anything that makes you feel even 1% better is worthwhile.  This is my last baby (pretty sure of that now, if I wasn’t before) so it’s unfortunate that I can’t wear it more than I did but if someone you know is just starting their family, I think a Gownie from Baby Be Mine Maternity would make an excellent baby shower gift – certainly something no one else would have thought of!
