Raisels – Pucker Up!

When given the opportunity to try out a “healthier alternative to candy” in the form of Raisels, raisins that are tasty enough to pass for candy, I was game.  In our household, my husband and I are the sugar-police.  Our kids do not regularly have candy, soda and the like (we’re not perfect, we have a fierce take-out problem) but they do of course like sweet tasting treats once in awhile.

Raisels are a clear winner in our household.  Not only are they a nutritious snack (100% of the RDA of Vitamin C, fat free, rich in antioxidants and containing no high fructose corn syrup), they also really do taste like candy!  Each of the 5 flavors is a sour-mixture which I happen to love (especially when pregnant!) and depending on your sour-tolerance level, I think some of them are pretty pucker-face worthy!

Although there’s no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors added, there is still sugar in Raisels, a lot compared to plain raisins.  However, when you compare Raisels to sweetened dried cranberries, it’s astounding to see that read that there’s 5x more sugar in the cranberries.  So, it’s all about reading labels and deciding what’s best for your family.  We like Raisels a lot, but I wouldn’t give these to the kids to snack on thinking they are a sugar-free snack – I’d treat them the same as their packaged fruit snacks that they love so much – a once a day treat if that – remembering that in the end they’ve got more nutritional value than those fruit snacks anyway.
