My Fabulous Life

Dragon’s Den?

Occasionally, when afternoon tv becomes too annoying (or, I admit it, Dr.Phil is on repeats) I check out programming I wouldn’t normally watch.  Lately, I’ve been sucked into watching CBC’s Dragon’s Den and marvelling at the feist and determination of the entrepreneurs on the show.

The premise is simple, instead of looking at small business loans, the entrepreneurs present their ideas to a panel of judges who also happen to be investors.  The goal, of course, is to convince these investors to give you money to help your business flourish in return for a stake in your company.

I watch the show not sure if I want the budding entrepreneur to “win” or “lose” because I’m not sure yet which is which.  I wonder what it would be like to cultivate a project, design, or business from scratch and then have to ask someone else to contribute financially in return for a sizable stake and ownership in that baby you’ve produced.  I guess I’m a control freak and would probably look at business loans before going down this avenue.

Am I missing the big golden key here?  Or is it just that I’m completely and undoubtedly a control freak and haven’t learned how to share?

  • We watch it. Sadly they are all repeats for us though now as we wait for a new season.

It’s not just the money when it comes to Dragon’s Den. It is also the Dragons experience, knowledge and contacts that the entrepreneur comes looking for.
