Have you heard of gradient compression hosiery? Support hosiery? Neither term evokes a nice image. When I think of the terms, I naturally think of a granny wearing those ugly taupe colored things on her legs that slouch down and look…well….old. Up until recently, pregnant women who were told by their doctors (or their caring friends) that they should wear gradient compression products when pregnant only had a few (ugly) options to choose from. Companies like Therafirm decided that just wasn’t very nice!
What exactly is gradient compression/support hosiery and what does it do in pregnancy? I learned that graduated compression can help energize tired, achy legs and help prevent or reduce swelling. The controlled pressure is greatest at the ankle and then gradually decreases, helping to promote blood flow.
For people who are not pregnant, gradient compression hosiery is recommended for people who sit or stand for long periods of time (you may hear about people who wear similar products on long flights, for example).
When I received my Footless Maternity Tights, I opened the box and showed my husband how small they looked. I wondered how on earth I was going to fit them over my pregnant stomach – they looked like normal tights. When I put them on the first time I was really surprised by how snug feeling they were – not like usual tights. Still, I managed to get them on and then over the belly which was actually easy (they are snug fitting through the leg but offer regular support around the belly).
Once they were on, they actually felt really good! I’m not entirely sure why, maybe it was because they were so light compared to the usual maternity jeans or sweatpants I have been wearing, but I felt great wearing them (and it didn’t hurt that I looked pretty great too, heh.)
After trying these out, I’d recommend them to other pregnant women for sure. Now I’m on a mission to find some cute maternity sweater dresses and maybe a cute maternity denim skirt to wear my footless tights with (as the belly gets bigger that sweater is going to get shorter!)
