I was warned. A friend watched The Last Song a few nights before I had planned to, and she told me she was crying towards the end. The warning didn’t stop me from being a blubbering mess when watching it myself. So, before any review of the movie itself let me just tell you this: come prepared with some tissues. I can’t help you if you end up sobbing into your sleeve.
The story mainly centers around Cyrus’ character of Ronnie, who falls in love with a boy from a well-to-do family during a summer where romance was not a part of the plan. Ronnie and her little brother are visiting her dad, divorced 3 years before from their mom, and Ronnie is holding a serious grudge.
The teenage -romance component was a little hard for me to buy – it’s probably that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be a teenager and fall in love in a week so forgive me for that jaded comment!
Still, I wish the movie focused more on the family dynamic and less on the love story, because that would have made the last 20 minutes even more significant.
I’m glad I watched this movie alone as I’m sure my husband would have been rolling his eyes throughout, so I’d definitely suggest this as a great movie to watch on a girl’s night or when you just need a good cry! Like other Nicholas Sparks movies, it’s memorable and sweet and poignant – and your husband will probably never want to watch any of them with you by choice – but tell him he’ll score major brownie points if he does and you might just have someone’s chest to bury your face into when you’re sobbing.
