From its origins as a series of online cartoons, Diary of a Wimpy Kid exploded onto the pop culture scene when Jeff Kinney’s first novel was published in 2007. Selling over 30 million copies in print, Diary of a Wimpy Kid spent almost three years on The New York Times’ children’s best-seller list and has been translated into 33 languages.
The movie version of this much loved book was just released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack August 3rd.
We sat down to watch it this afternoon and although I thought it might be a little ‘old’ for Elijah who is 6, there were still plenty of hyjinks to keep him laughing and entertained.
Pre-teen Greg Heffley reminds me of The Wonder Years Kevin Arnold, suitably unable to catch a break in his journey through middle school.
Even the snotty Patty Ferrell reminded me of Becky Slater (remember her?) So, parents, if you liked The Wonder Years in the 90’s, you’ll enjoy taking a trip back to the awkwardness and annoyances (namingly a big brother who is 10x worse than Kevin Arnold’s brother ever was!)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a great choice for a family movie night – just don’t bore your kids with your Wonder Years recollections – they’ll hurt your feelings if they ask you if it’s retro.
