When I received this book to review, it brought me back to my early teenage years at home in my bedroom. When I’d get a new cassette (showing my age now, heh) I’d read through all the liner notes while listening to it for the first time. In the days before TMZ and Twitter, I’d read the liner notes for a glimpse into the life of my favorite singer or band hoping that maybe they would reveal something I had not known. Sometimes I’d find little gems like a story about a friend or producer, or a dedication to someone special. Of course, reading the lyrics to the songs was awesome too.
The Story Behind The Song brings readers personal recollections from some of our favorite songwriters. What I really appreciated about this book is that it appeals to all ages. Readers can learn about the story behind a classic like the Supreme’s “Where Did Our Love Go” (written by Lamont Dozier) or a recent hit “Apologize” by One Republic (written by Ryan Tedder).
This is a fabulous book for reading in pieces (which is pretty much how many moms tend to read, here and there when we can) and would make an excellent coffee table book. Something I found amusing was that several of our favorite songs with a name in the title really are about someone specific but the name was changed because it didn’t sound right. We wouldn’t feel the same singing “Gary’s Girl” to the tune of “Jessie’s Girl” would we?
