When I had the opportunity to review Bakugan Vol. 6: Time For Battle, released January 19th from The Cartoon Network, I was eager to check it out. My son, who is in Kindergarten this year, has recently been talking about Bakugan and I had no idea why. We’ve never watched it at home so I’m assuming a friend at school watches it, plays Bakugan on DS, or plays with the Bakugan Battle Brawlers toys. Before we settled in to watch the video we were sent to review, I did some research online. The funny thing I discovered is that many parents were in the same boat as me, “What is Bakugan and why is my kid crazy about it?”
What I learned before watching the video, is that Bakugan is about 6 children who discover these metallic cards that have fallen from the sky (actually they’ve fallen from another world called Vestoria but they discover that later). When a card is first thrown down, and then a Bakugan sphere lands on it (both in the cartoon and in the game that children can actually play themselves), the Bakugan is released from the sphere. I think of it as Pokemon on steroids, in its simplest form.
My son was so pumped to watch Bakugan Vol 6: Time For Battle. It’s like coming in on a series halfway through the season though, so we both had a hard time keeping up on what exactly was going on. I didn’t realize how much the game itself is a part of the show, Bakugan Battles, which is what kids would play with their friends, is what you’re watching.
The characters do a really good job of explaining why they are using the cards they’re using and what the result will hopefully be. “Ability card activate!”
My son noted a “bad” word in the show, one of the characters said “stupid” and he caught it right away (then again, Spongebob uses the word too). Overall though, I didn’t find Bakugan violent for my son but at 5 years old I think the game/battle itself is a little much for him. There’s scores to be kept, and of course the strategy of which card to use when. Right now, he just enjoys all the action on screen – it’s just me who’s left going, “Whaaaaat is going on here, I can’t keep up!” (Kind of like how my husband is when walking in mid-season on Grey’s Anatomy…it’s all relative.)1 reader is going to win Bakugan Vol 6: Time For Battle!
