Did you catch Andrea Bocelli and Mary J Blige performing ‘What Child Is This’ on Oprah this past week? I did, and it gave me goosebumps. When I was given the opportunity to review Andrea Bocelli’s Christmas album, released November 3rd, I thought the timing was perfect. Had I not seen him perform this week, I may have not been as interested.
I call Andrea Bocelli’s My Christmas “Christmas music for grown-ups” in our household. We of course have some children’s Christmas music (Dora’s Christmas was playing this morning) but even the usual Christmas music I listen to each year is the same music I have listened to every Christmas for the past 10 years or more.
This is the perfect cd for playing as background music in the house or while sitting by the tree as I am right now working. Andrea Bocelli’s voice is something that can make you pause mid-step and listen intently. Who is this wonder? His Biography is quite impressive. Bocelli lost his eyesight at age 12 after an accident at a soccer game (though he had limited vision before this due to glaucoma). As a child, Bocelli recalls being “one of those children who would always be asked to sing for my relatives. I don’t think one really decides to be a singer – other people decide it for you by their reactions.” He holds a law degree obtained from the University of Pisa, and sang in piano bars for extra money in his early years. He signed his first record contract in 1993.
My favorites on this album are What Child Is This and Angels We Have Heard On High which are remarkable songs. I got a smile from hearing Bocelli’s accent in Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and I’m pretty sure I heard The Muppets on the Jingle Bells track.Andrea Bocelli ~ My Christmas is so versatile that anyone from your sister to your grandmother could enjoy this release. I do think that if you’re like me and your Christmas music consists of Mariah Carey and Boney M, you may appreciate a more mature take on the holidays. Nothing wrong with the others of course, but Bocelli’s majestic voice makes you truly hear the spirit of this season.
