When I was pregnant with my first, I was fascinated watching a wee baby sleeping in a sling at a booth selling…slings of course. I wanted my baby to be just like that, and so, I bought a $70 sling without researching my options at all. That was the sling I saw and that was the sling I bought. Big whoops. It was big and bulky (the sides were padded!) and my son hated it every time I put him in it. Fortunately, I was able to sell it second hand (“barely used!”) but I warn new moms against making the same mistake I did. Do your research first, borrow a sling from a friend (who is close to the same size as you) and check out other carriers. If you’re looking for a basic sling that won’t break your budget, HugaMonkey is a great option.Since I don’t have a wee baby anymore (sniffle!) I asked a friend with a 3 month old to do the honors of reviewing HugaMonkey and this is what she had to say: After I had my first two daughters I was always envious of the women in my moms group who walked around so confidently and comfortably carrying their little bambinos in their slings, while I walked in with my back cranked to the right side while I carried the heavy and awkward bucket seat up 3 flights of stairs.
During my third pregnancy I made a promise to myself that I would go out and splurge on a sling. I looked at many different kinds and so many of them had a lot of material that required 3 minutes of wrapping around the waist, shoulder, back and then ended with 2-3 feet of material hanging down your leg. I am not Houdini so I knew this was out of the question. I needed a simple sling. I checked out the pouch slings and couldn’t believe the price of some of them! I was a first time sling wearer – what if I didn’t even like it? How could I justify spending $70-80 on a sling?
I found HugaMonkey to be reasonably priced. If I didn’t like the feel of the sling, I could justify only spending $30. The material is very light. I have heard other moms say that they get overheated while wearing their slings indoors. There is extra material in this sling which is beneficial to my daughter because she likes her eyes covered when she is trying to nap.
