Livie & Luca is a breath of fresh air in the children’s shoe industry. It was nice to read about a team of three moms who, back in 2005, launched Livie & Luca after looking for fun, whimsical, lightweight and flexible shoes and realizing it was a niche that needed to be filled.
One distinctive element of Livie & Luca that sets them apart is that their shoes are all made by hand (!!!) and each pair of shoes have a mark on the inside left by the person who made them to prove it.
The company uses the remains of high quality leather to make their shoes, helping to reduce their own carbon footprint (very cool). They also give back – 10% of their online sales are donated to charity (Books for America is the selected charity for Summer 2009).
Now, all that is awesome but what about the shoes? The shoes happen to be pretty darn adorable and the best part – distinct. You are not going to see the same shoe on every second child at the playground just yet (Livie & Luca is going to be a presence out there soon enough!)
We were sent the Pio Pio Lavender Mary Jane style shoes. I love shades of purple for my daughter so these were perfect with the lavender base and plum birds as accents. My daughter has been wearing these shoes for the past few weeks barefoot, which is only possible because the shoes are made with leather and therefore breathable. Soon enough she’ll be wearing them with tights or socks.
