Giveaways and Reviews

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (closed)

Bedknobs and Broomsticks Enchanted Musical Edition was released on September 8th on DVD! On August 26th I posted my review of this Disney classic as well as a great giveaway for 2 readers to win a copy. Now, I’m able to review the DVD as I have my own copy.

I had heard that Bedknobs and Broomsticks had a lot of similarities to Mary Poppins (which was made years earlier) but (gasp!) I have never actually sat through the entire Mary Poppins movie so I wasn’t searching the comparisons out.

The movie is set in the 1940’s in England during the war. Children from the towns are being sent to live with foster families to keep them safe from the violence in the sky and three orphans end up living with a “spinster” named Miss Price (Angela Lansbury). The children soon discover that Miss Price is an apprenticing witch!

The real fun begins with Miss Price and the children set forth to discover the final spell needed for her to complete her apprenticeship (which, it turns out, is missing from the book her so-called instructor was passing them on from).

The only similarity I found, and barely at that since I’ve only now seen one of the two compared films, was the bonus feature song “A Step in the Right Direction” sung by Angela Lansbury. I thought it sounded a lot like “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins. Other bonus features include “The Wizards of Special Effects” hosted by Jennifer Stone from Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place (great tie in between the two, don’t you think?) We get to see the special effects from Bedknobs and Broomsticks and also how far the craft (excuse the pun) has come in the years since this movie won the 1971 Academy Award for Special Effects.

The music used in the film is really featured on this dvd in the other bonus materials. Aside from the bonus feature of “A Step in the Right Direction” other bonus features include Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers which is a closer look at the music used in the film, and a rare clip from the Portobello Road recording session (these are gems that are hidden in the Disney vault, it does make you wonder what else they are saving for future DVD releases).

If you’re feeling nostalgic, take a peek at Bedknobs and Broomsticks in stores now. If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s a nice family-friendly classic that might have you humming some of the tunes when you’re done!

Great news!
