Pete’s Dragon was originally released back in 1977 (awesome year, very fabulous people were born then). This movie reminds me of my childhood – I know for sure that I saw it sometime around age 5 or 6, which is how old my son is now. So, it’s really cool to be able to share with him a movie from my own childhood that just happens to be making a new and improved comeback on August 18th when Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment releases Pete’s Dragon: High Flying Edition on DVD (full of bonus features!)
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, it’s about an orphan named Pete and his 12ft tall dragon named Elliott (great tip for trivia, I’d never remember his name) who can conveniently make himself invisible. Pete escapes his mean adoptive family and along with Elliott ends up in Passamaquoddy, Maine. Soon, they are taken in by a woman named Nora and her father Lampie (played by Mickey Rooney) in the Passamaquoddy Point Lighthouse. Adventures follow, including keeping Elliott safe from Dr. Terminus who discovers Elliott is real and devises a plan to capture him!
The movie was full of musical numbers and some pretty advanced imagery for 1977. My son giggled at Elliott’s high jinks and I caught him attempting to hum along to the songs more than once. It was a cute movie, and new to me since I barely remember most of. If you’re feeling nostalgic, Pete’s Dragon can take you back to your childhood pretty quick.
We checked out the bonus features at the end. There’s several demo recordings of the songs used in the movies, which I found interesting. Usually, bonus features consist of theatrical highlights, directors thoughts, etc. I liked going back to the basics here. My kids liked checking out the “Where’s Elliott?” bonus feature game too.
Look for Pete’s Dragon: High Flying Edition on store shelves and online August 18th.
