Reading Making Babies by By Sami S. David, MD and Jill Blakeway LAc, took me back in time and it wasn’t to a particularly happy place. Before I had my amazing son over 5 years ago, my husband and I went through some really tough times dealing with unexplained infertility for two years. In those two years we both endured medical tests – myself more than him – including a laparoscopy and hyteosalpingogram and I took Clomid for 4 months. All our attempts were futile and after 2 years I was told by our Reproductive Endocrinologist that we had a 2% change of conceiving on our own, as she passed a form across our desk listing all the procedures we could attempt next and the costs involved. I burst into tears right there in her office.
It was then that I decided there had to be another way, something I had not thought of before. A coworker mentioned seeing a great naturopath who practiced traditional Chinese medicine and a light bulb went off. I learned so much from this doctor, and I fully trusted that he would find the reason why we were not conceiving. After 3 months on his herb and vitamin regimen and also following his advice about lifestyle practices (things like not drinking cold water, it’s too harsh on your body, or starting a yoga program to meditate and focus) I was finally pregnant! That story is what brought me my son Elijah. Years later when I wanted to get pregnant again, I started my doctor’s recommendations once more and again, 3 months later it worked. I fully trust in Chinese medicine and have recommended this doctor and the practices to many friends.
Making Babies takes a look at both conventional medicine and Chinese medicine when looking at infertility issues. I liked that the book is neither on one side or the other, but rather gives information to compliment whichever path you choose to getting pregnant. The book is full of great tips and case studies, and has great information about nutrition and vitamin supplements if needed. The 3-Month Program for Maximum Fertility is at the last 1/3 of the book, and takes all the information addressed in the first 2/3 of the book and brings it together for the Program. Do you know the role of Omega 3’s in fertility (I do, I do, I took them as part of my own regimen). What about antibiotics? Protein – can too little or too much be harmful? Can a cup of tea a day really make a difference? Issues like these are discussed in Making Babies, and more.
5 of my readers are going to win their own copy of Making Babies. If you’re planning on getting pregnant or know someone currently trying to start a family, this book is an excellent resource even for couples with no known fertility issues (Chinese medicine follows that the health of mom and dad predict the health of a fetus and pregnancy…it makes perfect sense).
