Dr. Lara Zibners is an Emergency Room physician who has pretty much seen it all when it comes to children’s mishaps, illnesses…and oh yeah, the things they stick up their noses. I wondered if this book would be a boring medical how-to with pages upon pages of how to babyproof your home but was pleasantly surprised to learn that it’s nothing of the sort.
Dr. Zibners writing comes across like you’re reading an email from your best girlfriend…who just happens to have a PhD and an interest in children’s medicine. She reassures readers that your little boo isn’t going to be toxic if she eats a quarter (and advises against looking for them making their exit, as long as your little monkey is happy just let that quarter go mom!) and also explains when it is important to get to the emergency room and when you can simply wait to call your doctor in the morning.
The book is well laid out so that, should you encounter a medical issue (5, 4, 3, 2…lol), you can pick up the book, flip to the Contents section of the front and find what you’re looking for. There’s also, of course, an index at the back for easy referencing. I used it yesterday to look up what to do about pinched fingers (set the Mother of the Year award down over on the table, thank you.)
Being a mom of two, there’s still no way I’ve encountered or seen it all. This book is a fabulous resource without any of the other baby basics other infant/childcare books get crowded with. We already know how to bath baby and when the right time is to start solids – this book assumes you’re a capable mommy and have that all covered and instead gets into the stuff that we’re not prepared for. Pick it up for yourself (there’s a great list on this site of where you can purchase the book, including Amazon of course) or purchase it for a friend (or your mother in law).
