This frugal mama loves the idea behind all the products at Selestial Soap – It shouldn’t cost more to live green! I know we can all relate to that statement. Of course we want to do more to protect our environment, of course we want to find natural products that perform just as well or better than our usual cleaners. The thing is, now more than ever we are on a tight budget and we need to look out for our bottom line. So, if there are natural cleaning products out there that DO perform well but are not outrageously expensive…they deserve a closer look.
I was sent 2 bottles of Selestial Soap Laundry Detergent, in both the unscented and Lilac scent. I was willing to give the products a try because I’m always looking for something to wash my kid’s clothing with that doesn’t leave behind a residue (my son’s eczema really acts up from fabric softeners and strong detergents). I figured a natural detergent would be a good idea, since Selestial Soap’s detergents promise not to leave a residue on clothing.
Selestial Soap Laundry Detergent is suds-free and when pouring it into my washing machine for the first time, this was a little unsettling. Don’t we need suds to clean? The answer is no. The suds is really just one of those visual things that makes us think that a product has good ‘cleaning power’ when actually, if you are looking for a product that is good for the environment or good for sensitive skin, suds are not something you want to see. Suds actually leave residue on your fabrics and can make them look dingy (and in our case cause skin irritations).
I used the Unscented detergent first and then wondered if I would be able to use the Lilac Scented detergent on my son’s clothing without a reaction. Perfumes can really irritate his skin but the scent in Selestial Soap’s products is from essential oils (natural source). I am happy to report that his skin didn’t react at all to the scent in the Lilac Scented detergent – finally his clothing can have a bit of scent to it!
So, aside from the lack of bubbles, this product performed the same as any of my regular detergents with one more advantage – Selestial Soap, for whatever reason, leaves my clothes softer than my other detergents! I assume that is because there’s less ‘stuff’ in this product, but whatever the reason I like the result!
A 50oz bottle of Selestial Soap detergent is competitively priced at $6.99 – it’s true that you can be good to the environment and still spend the same amount of money. How great is that?
