In my search for safe products for my children, I’ve come across organic clothing in many stores and many more websites. I think organic clothing is a fabulous, and long overdue, idea and when the price is right I will choose organic clothing when I can. It’s no surprise that cheap cotton is therefore cheap to purchase and something that takes more effort and more care in its creation is therefore going to be more expensive to purchase. I get that. What I have learned though is that like anything, there are variations among organic cotton and you may be paying for quality that simply is not there, organic or not.
Booda Bellie, a Canadian based company, uses only 100% certified organic cotton and certified organically grown cotton in their bamboo blended garments. This is an important fact.
While a clothing label may say “Organic Cotton” there is no governing body to dictate how much organic cotton must be in a product for label to read ‘organic’. Food is different, there are a lot of rules for labelling produce and other foods organic but the same doesn’t hold true for clothing so watch those labels mamas! We picked the TREX shirt from the Comfy Collection, and Elijah loves it. Apparently a dinosaur saying “Woof!” is enough to erupt giggles from Elijah and his friends at nursery school, and I have to admit I get a kick out of it as well.
When we received the shirt I was surprised by how soft and light it felt. No heavy, stiff, cotton here. It felt too luxuriously soft to put on a rough and tumble 4 year old boy but since it wouldn’t fit me…
I picked a size medium (5-6) to be on the safe side but as you can see from the length a size small would have fit ok as well. This is great though, because he will be able to wear this shirt right through the summer and onto next fall as well.
I washed the shirt, and put it in the dryer, and it maintained its size and shape. Most importantly, the softness of the organic bamboo cotton is there!
