You Clean Your Kitchen, But Do You Clean Your Coffeemaker?

Many of us go through cleaning phases – spring cleaning isn’t just a popular term, it’s known because for whatever reason, springtime makes us want to refresh, clean, and renew.  What of fall then?  I think once the kids are back in school and households go back to a regular routine, we start to look around at everything that has been neglected during the summer months and give our households a cleaning overhaul as well.  Fall cleaning certainly isn’t as popular a phrase but it’s definitely something many of us do.

When you’re cleaning your kitchen, I bet you typically organize your pantry (one of my worst hording places!), your plastics drawer, and perhaps you give your fridge and stove a super-cleaning to eliminate any grime and fingerprints.  But do you clean your coffee maker?  Did you even know you had to do that?  I admit I had not considered that I might need to do this as we’ve been using a single-serve coffee maker for awhile now.  I think when I had a regular coffee brewer I cleaned it when I noticed limescale on the coffee pot, but with my single-serve I don’t really see anything, so I kind of forgot that just because you can’t see dirt and grime, that doesn’t mean it isn’t collecting, whoops.

According to a survey conducted on behalf of Affresh, 77% of Canadian homes have a coffeemaker on the counter, but up to 54% of coffee made at home doesn’t taste the way it should.  Limescale can affect brewing time and taste.  While vinegar has been used by many to clean the coffeemaker (I know my mom did this), it can alter the taste. While 1/3 of Canadians agree that cleaning with vinegar will do this, 69% still use it as their coffeemaker cleaning solution.

Thankfully, Affresh – the brand you may associate with a washer cleaner like I did – makes a Coffeemaker cleaner and if you haven’t cleaned your coffee maker, the great news it that it’s really simple to use.  You can pick some up, clean your coffee maker in just a few minutes (the regular brewer style or single-serve) and feel awesome knowing your coffee doesn’t have any gunk in it because you’re such a cleaning smarty pants.
