As with many things, although when thinking of a standard crib toy one popular brand’s product comes to mind, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best one out there or in my experience the safest.
We have tried a few hard plastic crib toys to entertain our kids over the years (you know which ones I mean, the aquarium-style ones that feature lights, music and sound) and although they have been fabulous for keeping curious minds entertained (that includes you, dad), they also pose a hazard once your little ones are standing up in the crib which inevitably means falling down as well.
Because the crib toys are hard, a little mouth can take a pretty good hit on the crib toy if baby falls against this which has happened more than once in our household. I figured my options were either to deal with it and try to prevent the crib-fall from happening in the first place, or take out the crib toy altogether. Then I discovered the Northern Lights Soother crib toy from Lamaze!
This attachable crib toy features lights and sounds just like the other ones but it’s covered in soft, padded, fabric so that there’s no hard edges. Brilliant!
Featuring a forest scene with animal friends, it can be turned on and off by a parent using the buttons at the top or by baby using the soft ladybug on the front. The lights are pretty cool – Everleigh is transfixed watching the scene unfold before her in soft colorful lights that continually change. We don’t use the music function as the lights are all we need to catch her attention.
I have replaced our old crib toy with this one, just because I feel better about her playing in the crib with it. The other ones were great, but this way if she falls against her crib toy I won’t have to worry about her hurting herself.

He is very cautious and afraid to take risks right now, afraid to get hurt, and having hit his head on his hard plastic aquarium thing in the crib, he would probably say thank you if he had something padded when he begins to pull up or continues to fall over!
